Arlo Guthrie heading down toad to Klein

Since the mid ’60s, Arlo Guthrie has helped keep the family name at the forefront of the folk music scene, following in the very large footsteps of his father, Woody.
When Arlo Guthrie brings his act to The Klein in Bridgeport Sunday at 4 p.m., he’ll bring with him a third generation of folk-singing Guthries son Abe, daughter Sarah Lee, and her husband, Johnny Irion.

He’ll need the support as this tour he’s embarking on is scheduled to take more than 10 months and encompass more than 120 shows throughout the United States and overseas.

"Well, I guess if we didn’t love it we wouldn’t be doing it," Guthrie, 56, said in a recent phone interview from his Washington, Mass., home. "That’s sort of ended up being a way of life for us. I mean, that’s just what we do."

"I’m glad to be coming back to Connecticut. For us it’s a hometown gig. We’ll just drive down from the Berkshires that day and it makes it really easy and fun. I look forward to those kinds of gigs."

Guthrie recently completed a short jaunt to Austria and Germany, but has a much larger scope planned for next summer.

"We haven’t done a real monster tour overseas in a while," he said. "but in June [2004] we’re heading out to do a worldwide tour which will hopefully take us to Ireland, the U.K., Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Italy, Turkey and Australia.

"We haven’t done a tour like that in a long time, which is one of the reasons I’m really anxious to do it."

Getting out on the road is undoubtedly in his blood, and so is using his music as a way of speaking out on issues he feels strongly about. He will most likely always be best known for his 18-minute folk epic, "Alice’s Restaurant," but he has sustained a 35-plus-year career by entertaining crowds with his warmth and wit, as well as his music.

This tour of intimate venues will be in contrast to his stops at the many summer folk festivals that have sprouted over the last 30 years. At the festivals, Guthrie doesn’t get the amount of stage time he would like to build a rapport with his audience, one of his strong points. But he finds there are other benefits.

"The festivals are easier and more fun in some ways, because you play less and you get to hang out backstage more with all the people you never get to see unless your doing festivals together," he said.

"Another nice thing about a festival is we always get new victims, who probably came to see somebody else and stuck around," he added with a laugh.

But playing his own concerts gives Guthrie more satisfaction than working the festival circuit.

"We’re sort of looking forward to getting back to our routine shows, where we have a little more time on stage and the whole event is geared around us rather than a whole lot of people,"he said. "It just makes it a little easier to get everybody up there and organized when you’re doing your own shows. All the gear and stage stuff is set up just for you, so it’s a lot easier sometimes just to go out and do that."

If all goes well, Guthrie hopes a live album will come out of this family tour.

"That’s all in the works," he said. "We’re trying to do a live album because I think one of the strong suits, that is sort of second nature to us, is the live stuff [with] the interaction between Sarah Lee and the audience and me. It’s just fun.

"I don’t know if we’ll capture it all on a CD, but that’s what we’re attempting to do."

At least if it does work out, there won’t be any trouble finding a record label to release it as Guthrie has run his own Rising Son label since the ’80s. The label is housed in the Trinity Church in Housatonic, Mass., which was featured so prominently in "Alice’s Restaurant." Trinity Church also houses the offices of the Guthrie Center, a community service charity, which is also a family affair.

Guthrie hasn’t released an album of new material since 1997’s Mystic Journey, which he recorded with his son Abe. He said he had two albums "in the pipeline," but technical problems have prevented their release.

"They’re on hold for the moment, but one of them is going to have to be re-recorded altogether and the other we’re still trying to salvage," he said.

"One of the downsides of doing your own recording these days, like everybody’s doing, is that you run into problems that we didn’t run into when we were recording in the big studios in Hollywood."

Still, the president of Rising Son Records couldn’t be happy with two records being halted.

"No, he’s not," said president Guthrie with a laugh. "I’ve been avoiding him."

WAMC Public Radio announced the upcoming benefit show at the Egg in Albany. The show benefits will be divided equally between WAMC and the Guthrie Center... It sure sounds to me like it will be something special.

I'm trying (unsuccessfully) to find a link to Alan Chartock's article that appears in the print WAMC Program Guide. He says some really cool stuff about Arlo... and what they are hoping to do with this show... He says "I have always wanted Arlo to do a national radio show with all his friends. We'll play this one "live to tape" and maybe we can twist his arm into doing this on a regular basis. Garrison, watch out."

Wow that sounds good to me! I hope it goes well and everyone has fun doing the show! (The better to tempt Arlo to do it again!)

I'm going to that show for sure... and WAMC will have it on tape... maybe to become available to other public radio outlets so you can all enjoy it too! (WAMC does do internet simulcast, too, so I'll keep you posted if I hear anything more about it!)
