Live album to feature music from legendary tour

The next entry in the official Bob Dylan bootleg series, The Bootleg Series Vol. 5 - Bob Dylan
Live 1975: THE ROLLING THUNDER REVUE will be released in November by Columbia/Legacy.

The two-CD live set will include performances from the legendary tour including material from
Boston, Cambridge, Montreal and Worchester stops. In addition to the CD release, a
limited-edition package will also be made available, featuring a bonus DVD featuring two songs
from Dylan's feature film, Renaldo and Clara. A track listing for the CD is expected in the next
few weeks.

The Royal Thunder Revue began to take shape after the release of Dylan's Blood on the Tracks
in 1975, upon Dylan's return to New York City's Greenwich Village, where he began playing with
the likes of Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Joan Baez. When the Revue took to the road, Joni Mitchell,
Roger McGuinn, ARLO GUTHRIE, Mick Ronson and others were among the musicians in the troupe.
The tour ran into the spring of 1976.

The Bootleg Series launched in 1991 with the three-CD box set, The Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3:
Rare and Unreleased, 1961-1991, which collected unreleased tracks, demos and live songs
from throughout Dylan's career. Four years ago, The Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Live 1966, Royal
Albert Hall was released. The two CD set had been one of the most bootlegged performances in
Dylan's career.

Clarett has young Ohio State in running for national title

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There is plenty about this season's Ohio State team that
harkens to the past. The past, as in 1968, the last time Ohio State, or a Big
Ten team for that matter, won a consensus national championship.

Led by a class of sophomores and coached by
Woody Hayes, Ohio State went 10-0 in 1968. This
year's young team -- only six seniors started in
Saturday's 25-7 win against Washington State -- is
led by an 18-year-old running back, Maurice Clarett,
one of 11 true freshmen who have already played for
the No. 6 Buckeyes (3-0), and a retro coach, Jim
Tressel.

Though it's early, there's a reason the Buckeyes
could be a strong contender for the national
championship. The five teams ahead of them in the
USA TODAY/ESPN coaches' poll play each other,
which means they likely will eliminate one another.
No. 1 Miami hosts No. 5 Florida State on Oct. 12 and
is at No. 4 Tennessee on Nov. 9. Also, on Oct. 12,
No. 2 Texas meets No. 3 Oklahoma. The Buckeyes
travel to Cincinnati on Saturday before beginning play
in the Big Ten, which again looks to be average.

During an age in which coaches drive Cadillac
Escalades and have their own Web sites, Tressel is
decidedly old school. He even, albeit mostly in the
offseason, tools around in a 1985 Dodge pickup with
balding tires, which was given to him by his
father-in-law. Hayes, too, drove a truck, an El
Camino.

Tressel has given his players a 300-page tome entitled, ''The Winner's Manual,''
which contains inspirational quotes as varied as ARLO GUTHRIE and Hayes.
Tressel began compiling the book in 1986, his first season at Division I-AA
Youngstown State. Several times a week, before meetings, players take 10
minutes to reflect on its passages.

The Songs and Guitar of Ramblin' Jack Elliott

Ramblin' Jack Elliott is a rising star, which is ironic for a man just past his 71st birthday, not to mention the
fact that Elliott is a living icon of folk and country music. His
daughter, Aiyana, produced the critically acclaimed documentary, The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack, which
brought the old cowboy new admirers, as well as the renewed
attention of older fans.

Now we have The Songs and Guitar of Ramblin' Jack Elliott, which is portrayed as a teaching video, but is
closer to a voyeuristic peek into the dangling conversation
of two old friends. Arlo Guthrie makes a great foil to Elliott's distinguished poise. As the son of Elliott's
traveling pal, Woody Guthrie, Arlo is also one of the few people
who knows the old cowboy songs as intimately as Elliott, having learned many of them from Elliottt himself
when he was a boy.

Elliott is obviously uncomfortable with the camera, and is at his best when he's singing or absorbed in
telling stories to Arlo. Although there's precious little "teaching," in
the video, the split-screen cameras do a nice job of capturing Elliott's fascinating flatpicking techniques on
traditional songs like "Railroad Bill" and "Freight Train."
There are also the stories of a man who has seen and influenced some of the greatest singers and
songwriters of the last century. From riding the rails with Woody in
the early 50s to listening to Janis Joplin's first stab at "Me and Bobby McGee," the tales are endless. While
Elliott is a rather laid-back gentleman, his enthusiasm for the
songs shows through. "That's my favorite song in the world," said Elliott quietly as he finished playing
Woody Guthrie's "Talking Sailor," smiling his weathered grin from
underneath a black Stetson.

He also showed a little diversity as he spun through a few blues tunes, such as "Black Snake Moan" and
Leadbelly's "Blind Lemon," although he said Brownie McGhee
used to get him so looped he kept playing cowboy chords instead of the blues.

"How's that go, Jack?" asked Arlo of another tune, Elliott's own "Cup of Coffee."

"Well, it goes with Jim Beam and water, but we've only got the water," chuckled Elliott appreciatively.

It's great to see a man who still takes himself and his reputation with a grain of salt. Ramblin' Jack still
loves the songs, the snap of his fingers on a guitar, and the
company of friends. Whether you're looking for new cowboy songs or an intimate look at one of country's
authentic voices, this may just do the trick.

March 10 — I couldn’t get arrested. I went to a shopping mall this weekend wearing a T-shirt that said “Peace on Earth” on it, and, can you believe it, I didn’t get hauled off to jail. Not like the guy in upstate New York who got arrested— handcuffed, even—for walking around a shopping mall last week with a T-shirt bearing the same inflammatory anti-war slogan.

STEPHEN DOWNS, 60, became an international celebrity—and an unwitting symbol of America’s sporadic commitment to free speech—after officers in an upstate New York mall hauled him to jail for the crime of proclaiming an anti-war opinion in a public place. ( The actual charge was for trespassing after he refused to leave the mall or to take off his shirt.)

I assure you, this isn’t an Arlo Guthrie song. This really happened....

Two legendary shapers of folk music and American culture
They really need no introduction. Arlo Guthrie and Odetta were central figures in the culture of the 1960s, which would have
been a lesser thing without Guthrie’s "Alice’s Restaurant" or without all the artists Odetta inspired--who range from Bob
Dylan, Joan Baez, and Janis Joplin all the way up to Cassandra Wilson and Jewel. But even listeners who have Arlo Guthrie
and Odetta permanently seared into their psyches may not realize how vigorously these two artists have continued to

Slow season at Boarding House Park, but Arlo sells out his Saturday night show with record-breaking online sales (see below).
BTW, ticket prices for these shows are $10.

HARD TIMES AT THE PARK: The Lowell Summer Music Series at Boarding House Park has gotten off to a slow start this year, with attendance at this point down more than 50 percent from last summer. Bad weather hasn't helped (four shows have already been forced indoors) but even supposed blockbusters like The Rascals and Shemekia Copeland have drawn smaller crowds than anticipated.

There are still more than a few strong shows left on the docket, though, including this weekend's lineup, which features jam band Strangefolk tomorrow night and folk legend Arlo Guthrie on Saturday night.

ONLINE TICKET SALES FOR THE GUTHRIE SHOW ARE THE LARGEST IN THE SERIES' HISTORY, SO IF THE WEATHER COOPERATES, THE SERIES COULD BOUNCE BACK.
