* Arthur Penn's recording-to-screen transformation of Alice's Restaurant
(1969, MGM, rated R, 16 chapters, $20) is still the most entertaining movie ever
made about hippies getting arrested for dumping garbage. A passionate portrait
of dropping out and draft resistance that remains elegiac about the '60s without
being overly sentimental, it is definitely (as lead Arlo Guthrie says in his
commentary) a view of that era by filmmakers of an earlier era. This may be
why Guthrie's otherwise engaging commentary slightly underrates the movie,
which managed to land an Academy Award nomination for Penn's direction in
the year of The Wild Bunch, Z and They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (One of
those rare times when Oscar got it right when others didn't). This is the original
R-rated version, not out on video till now, though the differences between it and
the usually seen PG are fairly negligible.

There is an article in today's Wall Street Journal (4/19/01Page B1) written by Jerry Markon and titled,"You Can Get Anything You Want- Except the Name "Alice's Restaurant."
The article is about eating establishments with similar names going to court over the matter.
The only further mention is the comment,"Naming an eatery after the owner- a practice immortalized in movies like "Casablanca" and songs like the 60's classic "Alice's Restaurant- is particularly dicey in today's litigious society."

We have a restaurant called the 'Casablanca' in a small town where I live. There used to be a restaurant in the Town of Saranac Lake NY. (strange it was closed but the sign remained for yrs.) called 'Alices Restarurant'.

*I guess it was good for tourism....

It was a time when Huntington's Chorea, the disease that eventually took the folk balladeer's life, was just beginning to ravage his mind and body. "Nobody really knew what it was," Geer recalls, wiping away a tear. "They just thought he was maybe a little drunk."
Then, brightening at the memory, she adds: "There are a lot of tall tales about those times. And those two."
Even the ones that are true ring with the stuff of legend.
As people would pass by the theater on the canyon's winding road, Geer would grab as many as he could and sit them down on bales of hay so they could watch him and other blacklisted actors perform Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." If GUTHRIE was there, he might also play the guitar and sing. Afterward, they would pass the hat, accepting whatever was offered.

The ashes of Geer, who died in 1978 at age 76, are buried by a bust of the actor that sits near the theater's entrance, and these days GUTHRIE's son, ARLO, sometimes drops by to sing and play the guitar for audiences. So does Ellen Geer's husband, Peter Alsop, a noted folk singer himself.
And while the bales of hay have long since given way to benches, Ellen Geer notes that they aren't just any benches. They were built from timbers salvaged from the historic Santa Monica Pier when it was renovated in 1984.
"We're very proud of that," she laughs."

Visits to Bombay only seemed to corroborate my provincial, unsophisticated background. I recall my cousin taking me to his college where we met up with a young tutor in the hostel. He was carefully dishevelled, with a hint of a beard and swathed in a deliberately frayed jeans and T-shirt ensemble. At my cousin's request, he fetched his guitar and sang us a couple of songs - Arlo Guthrie, if I remember correctly.
It was an eye-opener. I wouldn't have dreamt of speaking to my lecturers at the Madras Christian College with such an easy familiarity. Most of them would have probably assumed that Woodstock was a pile of timber anyway!
