i just recently stumbled across this person (allen toussaint) via vinyl disc and had a quick listen...i had no idea who wrote this song!...i barely remember hearing it but i do remember it (i love it when that happens!)

On the Vox thingy: Bono originally took the name Bono Vox (good voice) which was shortened to just Bono as I recall.

Toussaint is quite a talented guy. Great songwriter, arranger and performer. I'm glad you "stumbled" upon him agnes. Hopefully he gives you a smile (and from what you shared he did).

eileen, i do not really know which song you mean...i mean, i am not really sure which direction to go on that one. i gotta tell ya, i was not really familiar with him when i came across the album...i know more about him now than i ever did! i recognized three songs from the album (two i'd heard by other artists, one i am not really sure how i heard), all songs (on the album) written by him...and i am thinking wow, what a gem! i realize now he has written loads of songs i have heard and never knew who wrote them.
basically i was intrigued by the album cover and the name of it rang a bell (pretty miraculous)!
also, cool to see all them folks together on one stage in that clip you posted!

where was i...oh yeah, so cheryl! it was glen campbell doing an allen toussaint song as it turns out...(it is the glen campbell version that was echoing in my mind) but i know i have heard allen toussaint's album version maybe a time or two...i remembered the voice thingy going on in that one. i don't know, maybe ron knows how they do the voice thingy on that one. i know i have heard george harrison's voice (for instance) go through the same sort of wavy waverson thingy as that over there...

Heh...well, it's a song about this girl, and this guy who somehow thinks his wife won't find out about said girl if he just uses certain non-streets to go about town with her. But wife isn't quite that out of it, and he makes up a lame story about how their "friendship" is based entirely on her willingness to loan him her car.

Robert Palmer (a vital source of songs I am embarassed to say I like) had a big hit with it, but it's also been done by Phish, Government Mule, and others -- though, as far as I know, Arlo hasn't done it yet.

yeah, when i was reading about...like a list of songs he wrote and came across that one...i am like, you are kidding me...he wrote that too!?? funny

as for songs that i like and don't really know what to say for myself...one example might be one i posted a couple of pages back by the scary eire who before that i had never even heard of...it happened that i was feeling gloomy...and i stumbled upon that song and perked right up! i think it even made my teeth three shades brighter! i mean, besides the utter mayhem, there is some epic record scratching going on in there! pffft...

and at the same time, i just love gus and duglas' performance of georgy girl...top notch!

Eileen, no need to be bashful/apologetic about Robert Palmer. That guy could SING! Mighty fine vocalist across many styles for my money ($1.83).

Haven't taken the time to listen agnes, but from what you describe it sounds like either flanging, chorusing or phase shifting - all "time based" effects. (I only listened to the live clip you posted of Southern NIghts)

ron yeah, if you could hear it i know it would help because i know you know your way around a lot of them gadgets (that ain't lip service, i just know it to be true) anyway, i was kind of curious about it and looking stuff up found out the "gadget" used was a leslie speaker! so wanted to post that.

also, i was thinking about eileen's robert palmer song and my scary eire song and started thinking of songs that might fit into the guilty pleasure songs category...i am not exactly sure what qualifies a song as such but this song came to mind i guess because i really like it and am not sure why so i will post it here...the audience participation is fun and it is fun to do that fist pump thing!

A Leslie speaker, as you may have guessed, is a speaker cab that was used with Hammond - and perhaps other - organs. It had a down firing speaker for the low end and a top firing high frequency horn. The low end speaker fired into a revolving drum like contraption and was about a third to a quarter open and the rest was enclosed. The high end fired into a revolving dual horn which rotated the opposite direction of the low end drum. The speed could be changed by footswitch from slow to fast. The change would not be immediate - it would ramp up faster or down slower when switched. The Beatles and others used it on guitar initially and finally someone tried running a vocal mic through one.
You may have been to a concert where one of these were used by the keyboard player. A lot of times they would place the cabinet "backwards" on stage so the back of the cabinet - which was easily exposed - faced forward towards the audience. They were big squarish boxes with real nice wood on 3 sides and perhaps a pressed paperboard or flimsy wood on the back - not sure about that last detail as I only ever saw the cabs with the back open.
It did give a swirly effect when running slow and kinda warble-ly running fast. George Harrison used one on his guitar part in the Cream tune Badge and on some stuff on Abbey Road. Others have used it also, but they don't come to mind immediately.
