Speaking of the Bizarro Planet, members of Middletown, CT's "Food Not Bombs" anti-war/anti-hunger group were cited & ticketed by the police Sunday for distributing food to the public without a license. They were also issued a cease & desist order by the city "... to protect the public health." Yep! Let 'em starve, but they'll starve healthy!

yeah, the half eaten food found in city trash cans among all kinds of who knows what else is probably much safer quality!

I don't know if that's really the case, Agnes. This group's been around for a while and, as some body else said, if they're concerned enough to feed the hungry then they probably wouldn't be feeding them garbage. They're volunteers, a lot of them Wesleyan University students, so one would think they'd have better judgement than that.

One thing that crossed my mind is that, when I was a kid in my old hometown, you'd occasionally see some homeless guy going through restaurant trash bins. It's just possible that some folks in a similar situation were seen hanging out with the Food Not Bombs folks and mistaken as some of their volunteers. Folks with suspicious minds are sometimes quick to jump to conclusions.

zap!!! i was actually agreeing with you up there. i understand what you are saying. you pointed out that the group was ordered to cease and desist..."to protect the public health"

and in sarcasm i said, "yeah, the half eaten food found in city trash cans among all kinds of who knows what else is probably much safer quality!" meaning, in contrast to the food the group would prepare instead. i hope that makes sense! i was in agreement with you...thanks for saying something so i could let you know that!

Oh, I'm okay with you, Agnes. See, that's what I don't like about posting stuff on the internet. It's tough to tell intent. But, likewise, I wasn't pointin' a "jumpin' to conclusions" finger at you. I meant people who say that they saw folks yanking stuff out of the dumpsters to feed the hungry. There are people who have said that. To quote The Chief on 'Get Smart', "I find that hard to believe."

zap, i didn't think you were hollering at me.
anyhow, i have gone and looked up a little about the food not bombs folks...and it looks like they may incorporate "dumpster diving" according to what i have read (which may be a discussion by itself)

i do think it is a good idea to utilize "surplus" food from markets and bakeries (among these may be items that have just reached their "sell by" or "best by" date and will be thrown straight away (i have drank milk past it's sell by date...but you already know i am not quite right! besides, it was not well past it!) or "imperfect" looking food that is otherwise good (these are just examples) anyhow food that is still good but ends up going to waste!

How true, Agnes. I remember seeing a national news story back during the Reagan era recession about a woman who ran a food bank (can't recall where). She was always getting arrested for pulling perfectly edible bagged loaves of bread out of supermarket dumpsters that were one day past the expiration date. What's that old saying? "Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink!" In a land of plenty, we let people starve and suffer. Guess it's part of what got this economy in trouble. The art of "more for me / less for you".
