I expect this has been chewed over quite a few times before but, as someone new to this forum, I'd certainly like to know your opinions of Arlo's recording career. So, if you can spare a bit of time, please throw your thoughts in here.

My own favourite albums are the early 70's pairing of 'Hobo's Lullabye' and 'The Last of the Brooklyn Cowboys'. I love the sound of these records - so warm and full of life - and the playing by all involved is superb. Arlo's interpretations of a number of Woody's songs are quite beautiful, especially '1913 Massacre' on 'Hobo's'. Other stand-out tracks on these albums, for me, are 'Somebody Turned On The Light', 'Miss The Mississippi and You' and 'Last Train'. I'm also very fond of these records because back in the late 70's, when I first discovered them, I was a rather moody punk-rock kid with a growing Dylan fetish (OK, both these things are still true) but Arlo showed me how much sheer JOY can be found in music. I can truly say these records lifted a cloud form off my head. They also helped me to find my way in my own, rather poorly played, interpretations of Woody, which owed much to Arlo's style. Thanks, man.

The good songs of Arlo ? There are so many ! As a guitarplayer in a learning proces like me i try to play the songs that i like the most but some are to difficult to play for me . Especialy fingerpicking is still a problem ) Songs that i like and play as well are : Coming into LA , City of New Orleans , Moon song , When a soldier makes it home , Sailing down my golden river . Next song that i gonna try to play is ' Highway in the wind ' . I love that song .

I dunno...I was riding home tonight and heard the album version of the motorcycle song...with gonna go see Ray and the harmonica and stuff...

hmmmm thats a tough question to answer, I really like the live ones alot but I love them all.

I always liked Outlasting the Blues I thought it was a good mix of songs

Hmm. There are some fairly recently written songs that have never officially made it to a record.

Outlasting the Blues is an inspirational album. I always loved that one. Too many good ones to choose just one...

that's s tough call. I guess one of my fav songs is "Days Are Short"

Mystic Journey is another one. Could never really figure out, why it didn't get more fan fare, among the gen public. But as Arlo readily admitts, most of his music, isn't exactly radio friendly.... Always get a kick wallking around a mall, or Wallmart, or my local grocery store, and hear CONO playing in the back ground.

My eldest son lives in Chicago, and has told me, that Arlo gets allot of air play, in the tri citys.. & not just CONO.... One played frequently is " Darkest Hour"

In visiting him, a yr ago in March, he showed me a really neat, video he had made, of Zoee growing up, her first b-day, Xmas, ect.. family babeques and the likes.... Very sweet photo-show.... But I suppose what amazed me more, was a lil part in the film, where's he' s putting her to nappy time... And the whole thing is done with a soundtrack. And in the nappy nap part, Darkest Hr. plays. He told me it was his favorite Arlo Song. I shouldn't of been surprized as he grew up, listening to all Arlo's stuff... That 25th anniversary set on cassette. But he told me he didn't remember it from home. As he had heard it on the radio so frequently..... Later that day, we were window shopping at the local music store in Gailsburg, and I bought him "Arlo's Greatest Hits', as that song is on there...... I think I paid $7.99 as it was a best buy, and on Reprise or Warner Brothers.... He's told me many times, in our phone conversations, he loves that album.... So birthdays aren't a guess anymore. I'll have to just get busy, and buy him Arlo CD's which I know he'll like... e.p. Amigo is a good one. More Together Again I see has been re-leased.... ( but I might have to keep that one for myself )


Another all time favorite..... Don't know why I haven't noticed it in setlist.... ( which I'm sure it is somewhere ) is "Wake UP Dead" AUESOME SONG....

I think I have extra affection for 'Days Are Short' is I can fudge it on guitar, and it doesn't sound 1/2 bad.... The rest of Arlo's songs are WIERD TO LEARN... wierd meaning hard... But most great musicians, write complicated tunes..... For a novice guitar player..

I hope this is as good a place as any to jump in! I introduced myself on another forum, but will do so again here . . . I'm Melanie, a new admirer of Arlo's who saw him for the first time a couple of weeks ago here at Ole Miss. I only have two of his records in my collection - Alice's Restaurant and Hobo's Lullaby - as well the film of Alice's Restaurant. If I may ask, what would y'all recommend I listen to next?
