Our brunch, at 11 a.m.: mimosas; ham, cheese, and green chile pie; grated-corn cornbread; blackeyed peas (fresh ones we shelled and froze last summer); apples and caramel dip. This has to be an awesome year for good luck!

Ceashel's post reminded me about the tradition just for good luck in PA, I ate so much sausage (pork) and sauerkraut one year I broke into hives and had to go to the hospital for a shot of something stronger than the oatmeal bath to cure.

Do you all do the dime under the plate, too?

A dime under the dinner plate? So many traditions I have yet to learn. I've heard of eating black-eyed peas, but have never done it. My parents always had to eat pickled herring at their New Year's Eve parties, but they never made us kids do it. I find all these traditions fascinating, though.

I've finally surfaced again...I got home from the Church on Tuesday afternoon, felt like crap, and ended up with a nice case of salmonella poisoning. I've basically been in bed since Tuesday night; I'm recovered and able to eat real food again.
New year's eve and New Year's day? When did that happen?
