By and large, 70% to 90% of you wanted something to be done to calm the economy, but you didn't want $700 billion in new debt to bail out Wall Street. The stock market has had record declines since then. What's going on?

You need to remember that you need to take control of your life. It's disturbing that people in government totally disregard what the people tell them to do. It's disturbing that the market goes down and the media panics about this. It's disturbing that greedy banks made loans to people who couldn't afford to repay, and people signed up for the trip when they couldn't afford it. It's disturbing that Washington ignores its constituents and takes huge strides toward socialism.

All of these things are disturbing, but none will cause this great nation to cease to function. They are not the beginning of the end. But the most disturbing thing is some people's reactions. Don't react based on fear or panic. Another negative reaction is that you are looking to Washington to fix your problems. They have never fixed your problems, and you want Obama or McCain to fix things. There has never been a president who can fix your problems. They always say they can and they never can.

YOU are in charge of your destiny. YOU are in charge of your life. When you look to Washington to solve your problems, we've got the seeds to destroy this country. It's time for you to change your life. It's not Washington's job to fix what's going on with you. If you are waiting on Washington to change something, you've got a very long wait! It is YOUR job to take care of you. Don't sit around and watch TV and panic and think you can't do anything. I've made and lost money, and every bit of that had to do with me being smart and diligent or stupid.

Quit blaming Congress or looking to them to fix you. YOU have to fix you! When you wait on the government to fix your life and wait for money to be taken from others and given to you, that's a spirit of envy. The only system that works is capitalism functioning under moral restraint. Go be somebody!

One of the first things I plan on doing is voting out the bozos who voted for this mess...

Looks like there are a few good democrats out there... unfortunantly none in MD. But at least one of the representatives I contacted listened... way to go Bartlett!!!

A philosophy that has certain merits, but is filled with half and less than complete truths. Personal responsibilty of course is very important and somewhat lacking nowadays, BUT, is is the governments job to control certain aspects of our economic system.Lack of reasonable regulations have led to the financial mess we are in now. Free markets are important in a capitalist system to be sure, but they need to be regulated( not overregulated). The rhetoric that Dave Ramsey throws out suggests that it's all our own fault, and by some reckoning, it is. For the people are the goverment. We need to change this stuff by making noise and electing the right people. (GO BARACK!) His rhetoric is also a thinley veiled supply sider attempt to shift blame. The point is, we let the fox guard the henhouse.By not properly regulating the investment banking industry, wall street in general and the mortgage industry, we let them run wild. Naturally, there were many people that got themselves in over their heads, but many of them were duped into doing so by smooth talking mortgage brokers, that also fudged numbers to close deals. Once a mortgage broker gets a deal, he is paid his often $10,000.00 or more commission, and he wipes his hands of the whole thing. Many of these sub-prime loans are then bundled together by the banking institution and sold to investors. This made many of the investment banks nothing more than casinos, where some dunderheads put all the chips on black, and the roullette wheel came up red.

Of course those that are steadfastly devoted to extreme supply side economics will not change their positions no matter how badly they may be proven wrong, because even in bad times it still works well for the super rich. They will look for scapegoats and try to direct the conversation in other directions. However, many of the middle class lemmings that have been fooled by them in the past will now see the light now that it has been somewhat clearly focused on the scurrying cockroaches that have helped to create this crisis.

hey wiz, before you go voting out more than half the congress that was compelled to vote SOME remedy into existance, whether it was a good one or not, why don't you first go back and focus on the politicians who were complicit in this all happening...the ones that didn't think government should be regulating wall street at all, and the ones who felt it was okay to break down the barriers between commercial banks and the investment firms... I can't blame the current crop of miscreants, they had no choice. If nothing were done, and government stayed out of the whole mess, there is nothing to say the current mood would not be worse, and many would be pointing their fingers at washington anyway, crying they were a bunch of do-nothings. In other words, damned if they do...

All I have heard for years is free up the rich from taxes so they can invest in America?

So they invest a huge chunk into a pyramid scheme based on shady marketing and selling practices!

Meanwhile, are infrastructure is in decay because they see the future as now not tomorrow?

Support for your own particular Representatives should be on an individual basis and how competent you believe they will be in handling the unbelievable mass stupidity that is the human race! As far as Government fixing problems or not fixing problems....Our Government, the USA Government...is supposed to be our voice! This is our mechansim of input on the future! My vote is my only mechanism of input on which way to aim the mass hysteria and I believe electing the right people and pressuring them to do the right things is the only chance an individual has to "take charge of their destiny".

So I don't buy that old sophmoric chant "Government never fixed anything" as it is the only representation I got!

I think the problem may be that we charged our destiny.

I would say we have squandered our future
Lived up to our potential
and we are
running full steam ahead
toward our destiny!

I mostly agree (with what PSBeaty wrote).

"We all carry eternity in our hearts and yet our tenure in time is brief and, finally tragic. Death interrupts the happiest of lives before all of its promises are fulfilled. The Greeks know what we have conspired to smother with easy smiles and false optimism---paradoxically, a tragic sense of life yields more joy than warm fuzzies."

The whole trickle down economics thing (thanks, Ronnie Raygun!) was a free spot on the bingo cards of the rich. The only thing that trickled down to the middle class and poor was the crap we always get from the well to do. They are, indeed, different you and me. And it's a pretty ugly difference.

And both Republicans and Democrats let major corporations keep merging to become super corporations. I thought that there were supposed to be anti-monopoly laws? Hell., the Supreme Court even gave rights to corporations over individual rights giving the corps, in the eyes of the law, more rights than the individual!

The following link is a pretty hard assed article By Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz about "Hating The Rich". I don't agree with everything she says but she does make some valid points. The site has some other interesting articles, as well. Man, is she pissed!
