The journals are mostly written in mirror-image cursive. The reason may have been more a practical expediency than for reasons of secrecy as is often suggested. Since Leonardo wrote with his left hand, it is probable that it was easier for him to write from right to left.

Left-handed writers using a split nib or quill pen experience difficulty pushing the pen from left to right across the page.

Of course we have had to learn to use our right hand. Ambidextrously. Ambidextrouscity comes natural to us lefties. Am I the only one who had their left hand tied behind their back? Or smacked with a ruler? Or set on fire and pureed in a blender.

No DRR I was never "forced" into trying to become a right? handed writer. My folks would not have allowed it.
That smearing thing has always been a problem, like when you had to write on the blackboard at school. And when I came to OZ in 1964 and I was in 4th grade they were still doing this thing here called "Copybook" where you had to use a nib pen and an inkwell!!!! In the book there were lines and you had to copy letters and words exactly in these lines as per the examples. Gee was THAT fun for a lefthanded writer!
And when you have to sign something, like a credit card slip at the store or a document, the person behind the counter alway tilts the piece of paper for you to sign you as if you are right hander and they kind of hold it there and you have practically rip it out of their hand to turn it the other way.

We didn't have nib pens butwe did use those pens that would pull up ink. I think they were called fountain pens. That ink would stay on your hand for days.

I get that , "Here is a pen for you to put in your right hand" also. Ha. Another one is cameras, yep, they are right handed too.

I'm right-sided with pretty much everything except my ears. I'm left-eared on the phone. Been that way since I was a kid so I don't believe that I started doing it so I could write things down. Figures that I listen from the left, I reckon.

I'm a right eared telephoner but that's due to my TMJ.

Last year we had to take a count of how many of our ccd students were lefties. Seemed like a strange request to get from a priest until I found out he would order left handed desks for them.

My dad is a southpaw. He became ambidextrious cuz the teachera at school would whack his hand for using the left hand instead of the right. Dumb & mean...

Guess what. We are back from our trip to Nags Head, NC but no phone or internet. The stupid men working on the road cut the phone lines when working on the road before we left. We reported it over the internet & they wrote back yeah they'd get on it. But they never did so we had to call them back after the holiday & they said they'd get on it. Came home & still no phone. Man came out there while we we at Nags Head & didn't do diddly squat from what I understand. So we had to call the Phone co again. Man there says it'll take 3 to 5 business days to get it fixed. I'll believe it when I see it. I am on my folks computer as they have cable net. I probably won't be able to get back on until Tues when I'll have to go to the library to get online. It sucks bigtime but what can I say. Arrgh!!!! Yuck! I feel like I'm in the olden days except at least our satellite dish is working. So I'll see ya'll back on Tues & catch up on messages then.
