It IS uniquely American but it didn't used to be that way, and it shouldn't be. One full-time job should be enough to make a living and someone needs to be home caring for the children.

Sure, it would be ideal. But life hasn't been that way for 40 years or so and we have to deal with the present and future, not the (ha!) ideal past. One job per person certainly should be adequate to make a living. And everyone working should be able to take a reasonable amount of time to rear children or care for parents without penalty. Tell that to the Republicans who ship our jobs overseas and see how hard and long they laugh.

Strwlady, it wasn't pretty when Shrub was governor, but I'd have kept him here vs. his being inflicted on the world. And now he's going to live here--not in Dallas, of course, but in the city of mansions completely surrounded by Dallas--Highland Park. It's fair to guess we'll never run into him; at least I hope not. I've never been to jail and I don't want to change that record. (No threats against anyone meant here, Mr. FBI listening in, it's just that I'd probably say the wrong thing, and we know you're not allowed to do that.)

The past wasn't always ideal, but it was usually simpler.
