I'm confused... why is vegemite banned? I have a small jar I bought at a World Market, just to see what all the fuss was about. It's not that bad of stuff, but a little bit goes a long way.

And why is marmite not banned, if vegemite is? It's the same stuff... And yes, I have tried that too... I can't tell much difference between the two, except that marmite is a little oilier than vegemite...

So why is vegemite banned??

It'a all the FOLATE'S (folic acid, a B vitamin) fault (oh and the front half)
GOOGLE Vegemite ban, Lisa, and read all about it.
For goodness sake, women here in OZ are encouraged to take folate during pregnancy to help prevent birth defects (and it has worked). But in the U.S. it can only be ADDED to bread a cereals.
Vegemite can't be imported for commercial use 'til Kraft and the FDA work out the Folate thing, but it can still be taken in for personal use. So it will be BLACK GOLD!! You can have one plant, OOPS, I mean tube, for your own personal use. More than one and that runway sniffin' guy will probably be lookin' for YOU!
Hey Larry, wouldn't you love that job!!!

That stuff is black :?: Larry, I'm starting to understand you. I'd rather take folic acid and vitamin B complex in a capsule than eat black bread spread.

Vegemite is basically a WMD of the biological type. If Bush finds out they are sending here, I'm sure he's gunna bomb Sydney.

I have a black market supply, it is called yeast extract, but don't tell anybody (unless they got the dough and have that crazed needy look in their eye)!

I have a small jar of vegemite and another of Marmite that I got at a nearby World Market. Musta been well before all this craziness.

I mean, WHY is folate banned except in bread and cereal?? What the heck do they think will happen if the stuff is readily available?

If pregnant women take it in Australia without trouble, why is it banned here? It must be a money issue, somehow.... it always comes down to that here in the US//// :?

The smidgeon of truth in this farce seems to be Kraft stoped importing Vegemite for fear of a lawsuit. Overactive lawyers (overreaching lawyers (you pick)) do confusing things.

kurt...

It is a long standing fear of the consumption of reactive chemicals. Before you know it, we could be a world of folate zombies!

Louise! We're encouraged to take folic acid during pregnancy too, they just want us to take pills instead of food...

I don't know about this vegemite stuff, if it's like eating vasoline... maybe it could be used as a salve instead.

:)
