Beacon Hill's summer doldrums may have ground real lawmaking to a screeching halt but they haven't stopped one pol from pushing for an official state syrup.
     Rep. William ``Smitty'' Pignatelli (D-Lenox) is filing a bill to have a sweet concoction made by Bay State folk singer Arlo Guthrie named the official state syrup. Guthrie, who is already recognized for having penned the official state folk song (``Massachusetts''), manufactures his Battleground Syrup from trees growing in Western Massachusetts.
     ``It's meant to be a fun thing,'' Pignatelli said. ``Arlo Guthrie is legendary in Berkshire County.''
     But state GOP executive director Tim O'Brien pointed to the proposal as an example of misplaced priorities on Beacon Hill.
     ``Just because it's summer doesn't mean we can't be working on reforming auto insurance and health insurance and getting tax relief for the Massachusetts taxpayers,'' O'Brien said, adding, ``I'm sure there's certainly enough saps up there to vote for it.''
     Lawmakers have come under fire this year for filing frivolous legislation seeking to name a state snake, vegetable and ice cream. But Pignatelli said his syrup bill is ``not frivolous.''
     ``It's not a waste of anyone's time in my opinion,'' he said.

...okay, my legistators (i.e. -saps:)...it's okay to lighten up for awhile.....not that much gets done anyway.....let's hear more about the syrup, snake, vegetable and ice cream.....anyone else want to tell them Arlo is legendary beyond Berkshire County??.....they don't get around much.....

Where can we get some of that syrup? I hope he makes a sugar free kind for us diabetics.
