I seem to like " The Ballad of Trickey Fred".... I heard Arlo and Abe do it live once. And have a live version, I downloaded off limewire.....

Any insight into that tune..... aka: It might just be the one song, that I don't know if ag wrote the words or the music....

Like every song is differant... That's a kewl thing..... I love the band Phish, but some of there songs can all seem to sound the same, at certain times.... maybe Phish is a bad example..... But it seems there was an era, where some bands music, sounded all alike... I'm drawing blanks just now. But I just got back from an hr, and a half of drug school..... ( class ) ..... Man those classes will fry your brain worse than drugs....

I knew City of New Orleans was on 45.... I forget the flip side???

And I remember hearing of a 45 with a short version of Alice's... not remembering ( or actually ever knowing ) the flip to that.....

Thinking of 45 records, really brings back memorys. ( yeah the old news of losing my vynal in a house fire ) My friend Sarg from R.I. says I should start up my vynal collection again. & I think he's right.... Time to dust off my old turntable...

I remember wearing out the grooves to all my older brother's and sisters 45's.... and I had them handed down, untill that fatefull night... can't think about it....

But my favorites were Bob Dylans side B... Gates of Eden.... And I had tons of Stones, and Beatles.... Loved the flip side of the Beatles. "You, Know my Name"... Side A was Let it be??? correct me if I'm wrong....

I had all the Amimals, Hermin Hermits, Steppenwolf, The Kinks, Allot of Motown.... Dave Clark Five, Bob Dylan, and one of my favorites by the Klymatics, called " Red Rubber Ball"... Too many too mention......

When My Mom died, we found a bunch of vynal in one of her closets, must of been stuff, left over from my parents divorce and she wanted to hang on to them.... Rambling Jack Elliot, and some Peter Paul & Mary, and Tony Bennett..... My sister asked people for 3 days, anyone wants them,, take em.... and everytime I'd try and walk out the door with em, she'd say, you'd better ask your brother James first, but I know he'd want you to have em..... I never did find out, who actually ended up with them... But I really can't see, anyone one of my brothers or sisters listening to Rambling Jack, or Tony Bennett.... But mabye like me Mom, they just wanted them to hold on to..... Material things are wierd.... My Wife Sue, told me, just grab them,,,, as NO ONE in your family listens to that stuff..... No way now how.... Oh at one time, in a far away place in time they did... Or my Dad was a Rambling Jack Elliot fan, and I never knew it..... I mostly remember him, listening to Buck Owens, and John Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones..... Good country music....... By the time I was 14 I had him thinking, " Everybody Knows this Is Nowhere " by Neil Young, the best thing that ever happened.... That and Exile on Main st. and Sticky fingers... But if you skip around on the tracks, it's all country music...... Back when country music made sence anyhow....

....certainly agree with you on "keys" Dave.....i love blues and have heard lots of versions of that song, and for my taste, no one does it better....

...many of his blues songs are extraordinary....his covers too...like "when you're down and out"... i always want to hear more blues....but that's my personal taste...

i was surprised by this thread....just a difference in how we all hear stuff i guess....i've never heard the folkslinger sing something, live or on Cd and think it sounded anything like anyone else....maybe when his voice was a younger it wasn't so distinctive as it is now you might say dylan and he crossed over sounds a bit... but maybe they were just listenin' to each other:)......

now...i don't hear any crossin over... they have their own sounds.....
Mystic Journey is all so Arlo....what about "All this Stuff takes Time".....Outlasting the Blues... such an arlo disc......the oldie Ring around the Rosey Rag... even if the lyric was folkprocessed from stephen foster....

It's not all that interesting, in fact I forget what it even sounded like... might have to go hook up the turntable as well, lol! But I remember asking Arlo about it... his comment was something along the lines of that guy turned out to be a real crook... or something along those lines (correct me if I'm remembering wrong Arlo). I'd never even heard of Guthrie Thomas before - but just had to pick it up as an unusual Arlo piece...

Weird... one side is 3:32 and the other side is 3:37.... yeah, definantly time to get the turntable outta the shed... Now I'm wishing I had picked up all those old Arlo 45's years ago - but since I had his albums, only went after the stuff I didn't have - such as Tricky Fred. Used to spend hours in old used record stores... something about the smell of them too... and even knew of a local place that got busted for selling bootlegs - but not before a friend of mine beat me to their only copy of Jimmy Page's "Lucifer Rising"... might also be time to see if any of those places survived and are still there. (They were usually little hole in the wall places)...

Alices sounds like an old blues song. I forget the name. Dan Stevens did that song when we saw him in Nags Head, NC a few yrs back. And then he lauched in to Alices after that. Wow, so now we know where Arlo got the influence for that song from. Which Side Are You On is a cors between Pete Seegers Which Side Are You On Boys & Dylans All Along The Watchtower...

I thought the influence for Alice's came from a guy named William J. Obanhein...

I went to "Mullinium Records" in Portland & was amazed at all the Arlo selections available!!!...We need a record store like this in my home town!!!!..................Portland Rocks!!
