A friend of mine emailed me that there will be a show on PBS tonight (9pm in the NY area) done by Martin Scorsese about Bob Dylan called No Direction Home. I thought I'd pass the info along. REG

So, in Part I we learned that Robert Zimmerman was a record thief, a bit of a plagiarist, a Woody Guthrie channeler, and a resume padder. Waiting for Part II, where I'm sure we'll see him getting booed off the stage at Newport.

Still waiting to see ADG (maybe in Part II); will be looking for a long-haired hippie type fishing downstream from Dylan.

I agree, Mikey - that about sums up part one!! I enjoyed it, tho!! There was a LOT mre Woody than I thought there would be and it was nice to see Pete make an appearance! I kept waiting for Arlo to show up... especially towards the end. Stay tuned folks ... for part two ... at a tv near you!!

Wasn't really too surprised that no mention of Arlo was made in Part I, but still thought there'd be a side interview with adg... but it was wonderful to see all that footage they have of Dave Van Ronk!
Of course, you know that this is an 'authorized' documentary, and that dylan and his associates had much input as to content, so this may be dylan's way of getting back at arlo for that time they played the same town the same night...

I really don't think Bob has anything against Arlo for that. Yes, it's a great story to hear ltold, but I promise you the Bob holds no grudge for it. The man is a living legend. I'm sure he has just a few gigs that went right for him to remember than to dwell on that one show.

I am shocked and confused that Bob was a record thief, plagier, Woody Guthrie Channeler, etc etc. I always thought he sprang forth by immaculate deception!!!

Arlo was in a couple of other PBS shows this week. Wednesday night was "Get Up, Stand Up: The Story of Pop & Protest" and Thursday, "The Sixties: The Years That Shaped A Generation". Pete was in 'em as well. Seemed like almost everytime they interviewed somebody, they were holding a guitar or banjo or some other musical instrument. Not necessarily playin' 'em, but just holdin' 'em! It got me to thinkin' that it might be easy to spot folk 'n' protest singers 'cause they'd be walkin' around holdin' on to their musical instrument of preference. Must make it hard to drive a car with a standard transmission, although Arlo drove a motorcycle while playin' the guitar and got a song out of it!

What we have here is the folk process. A good example is Percy's Song. Arlo sings a version that he credits to Bob Dylan, but it is actually a reworking of a much older song. You can hear a clip on Mike Seeger's site:

It actually goes back to Shakespeare who uses it in one of his plays - "Hey Ho the Wind and the Rain"... It's not the only familiar tune that Mr. D has used. But, Dylan's version (the story) is uniquely his own.

The 60's thingy Arlo was in was on one of the nites I went to see him the other nite either the ntie of the Roanoke or Charlottesville show so I didn't get to see it so I taped it. Well Sun nite I was flipping dials on the tv & found it playing on ch 57 the other PBS channel around here so I got to see if after all with Arlo in it. Very interesting show...
