Based on Pete & Arlo's first Together In Concert release:

The guitar "riff" is played constantly changing between G and C keeping the G tone (third fret) on the bottom and top strings.

G chord: 3 2 0 0 0 3
C chord: 3 x 2 0 1 3

Bob Dylan is a talented songwriter. I expect to be hearing more from him in the future...

Thanks for the answer endre, I like Bob Dylan songs too even though I sometimes don't understand them. But "Walkin' down the line" is a favourite song of mine because of Arlo's performance on the Woodstock Diaries DVD.

Looks like he's playing in D with a capo in 1969...

Yeah he's using a capo on the fifth using a D shape which makes it in the key of G. Once you get this D shape up there a bit of playing around seems to get the riff really easily! x

Actaully i've figured out how to play ALICES by ear on the piano. It's pretty rotten sounding lol. Arlo oughta try it on piano sometime...

Unfortunately I have never had the privilege of seeing one of your live performances, but fortunately I have had the privilege of hearing a recording of Alice's Restaurant many times. As with online tablature, it's really a hit and miss whether it is correct or not, so I don't even use them. But listening to the recording I have(which I cannot specify what album or performed where) I hear 3 seperate rythyms played at the same time(being the melody, the bass hits on the beat, and all the eclectic fill). Is this all one guitar? If so, beautiful job on the songwriting. If not, it will put my mind at ease knowing I don't have to assimilate two or three combinations of fretters and pickers into one guit-fiddle. So far I seem to play the fill and the melody fairly well together, but the 2 and 4 bass beats are hard to nail.

On a final note, the admiration I have for this beautiful music cannot be described in words. Keep on.
