Arlo Guthrie

The program culminates with the American Music and Arts Festival on July 10 and 11 at the Carroll
County Farm Museum. Folk artist Arlo Guthrie headlines, along with performances by Tom
Chapin, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Michael. The show could draw as many as 10,000 fans, Michael
said.

Among the festival performers will be Arlo's daughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie, and her husband, Johnny
Irion, the great-nephew of author John Steinbeck. They will perform what they are calling a family
series.

"It could be like reading The Grapes of Wrath while 'Riding on the City of New Orleans,'" said
Michael.

Irion, a returning instructor who will demonstrate the art of musical accompaniment in
"Complementing Each Other," persuaded his wife to join the Common Ground faculty. He
promised it would be a relaxing change from their grueling concert schedule that included 185
shows last year.

"I fully experienced the camaraderie with great artists, and I actually learned something," he said.

Sarah Lee Guthrie, the granddaughter of the legendary Woody Guthrie, will teach songwriting for
children and families.

In your spare time, maybe you can dig up a schedule for next week's festival?

Mary Cliff on her Saturday night "Traditions" radio show on WETA radio mentioned I believe that Ramblin' Jack would be on at 5:30 PM on July 10 and Arlo would be on at 6:30. So far an exact listing has not appeared on her Who's Where list but you might try emailing her for a repeat of what she said on her show.

Thanks, Janet. I knew about Arlo's scedule and I finally heard back from Walt Michael at the festival with a link to the schedule page.

I noticed they don't have part of their schedule set up right lol. They have Ramblin' Jack Elliott & Bryan Bowers the autoharp guy on at the same time. Folks are gonna want to see both of those. & Sun they got Bryan Bowers & A Dulcimer player on at the same time as Sarah Lee & Johnny. To see Sarah Lee & Johnny you gotta miss seeing the autoharp & dulcimer. Good thing I'm not able to go or I'd be going nuts trying to figure out what to do. Enjoy the show folks!

"Patriot's Dream" lyrics and credit to Arlo featured on title page (p.3) of the Summer 2004 Small Farmer's Journal (http://www.smallfarmersjournal.com-- but the page can't be seen online). It's a well-designed and interesting publication about farming with horses and protecting the independent family farm. Lots of retro agriculture illustrations, poetry, essays and letters from farming folk.

Just came across this newly published coffeetable book "Hippie" by Barry Miles.
Inside there are a couple of references to Arlo - one being his now famous quote at Woodstock, another reference is to the Alice's Restaurant movie. There is also a photo of a billboard(?) for the movie as well (with a youthful Arlo oozing with sexual appeal!!).
Even more interesting is the 'companion' CD for sale, that is a compilation of a few songs that the publishers seemed to feel epitomized the Hippie years of 1965 thru 1971... and lo and behold - Coming into Los Angeles is the leadoff track on the CD!

Barnes and Nobles had the book for a 'special' price of $19.67 until Aug. 31. The CD was $9.99

those certainly were weird and wonderful times....

The Sunday Washington Post about a month ago had an article on the topic of churches video taping and playing video tapes of sermons at services.
Today they have printed several letters sent in responding to the topic here is one of them.

I am 65 years old and have a first-generation iPod.
Last week when my wife and I made our weekly trip to the supermarket, I took my iPod with me and blissfully maneuvered the aisles listening to Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant," thus avoiding the store's piped-in music, which rarely matches my musical taste, and did so without interruptions announcing that "ticket number 25's deli order is ready to be picked up" or "more help is needed at the registers." Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, ought to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
