Yeh, it's not clear whether or not it was actually published, although in the letter, Porter does refer to the piece as an 'essay', and it has the whiff of an academic work certainly. Maybe written for private enjoyment?

All of which is neither here nor there, really. It is just that choice of wording gave me a charming mental image of Woody and Rabbie, exchanging chummy little rhyming notes about the honest working man, written with their favourite intoxicating beverages at their elbows. The whole idea gave me a fit of the giggles which I thought somebody else might enjoy as well. And Todd got a good hoot out of it anyway, so it wasn't a total failure. Live, laugh, and love, my friend.



I liked what she had to say as well, and don't disagree with it at all. A particular phrase struck me as funny, that's all. But my comment was never meant to be analyzed for its literary significance. It was just a little joke, and some of us have a different sense of humour. I share mine with Todd (which scares me if I think about it too much.)

Woody could communicate better than almost anyone, and without the yoke of proper grammer!
Think of some great communicaters, past and present, and the grammer and lack of they may have used.

Woody...great thinker and communicator with his OWN grammer!

Ronald Reagan...great communicator , but couldn' think worth a lick, and dummer than a box of rocks.

Charlie Chaplin...Didn't need to say a word, and got his point across!

Marcel Marceu (sp?) Said even less than Chaplin and got his point across!!

Helen Keller....not only communicated, but gave a voice to many who had not had one before!

George W. Bush.......well, let's just forget this one!

Simply because one posts a definition doesn't mean they are trying to start a fight. I found Bel's original post funny, but I understood from where Levi was coming. Neither Levi nor I could not have possibly have been less judgemental in our first posts, and I was fairly disgusted (but hardly surprised, given the past) that seemed to get called into question - again and again.

This thread seems to have a history of people reading the first sentence of a post, making a judgement call, and then commenting, which was why I'd stopped posting to it. None the less, I did want to give Levi a , because he gave me one.

I've often wondered if posting in this forum of (small talk) was cool. After reading this thread, it seems so. I have often times wanted to thank Janet, more than I have. She provides some real treats. Makes for good reading at night And to Levi, and just everyone who adds to the Folk Mad-ness. It seems you can tell who the 'real' folkys are.
