Had she phrased it (with whom he corresponded with), that'd been a whole different bucket of pickles. What Katherine meant is the similarity, Woody comparing his talents to the likeness of that of the gifted poet/lyricist.

makes me think of when someone posted that woody guthrie would never write songs about

I really try not to agree with Levi, but:

cor·re·spond (kôr-spnd, kr-)
v. intr. cor·re·spond·ed, cor·re·spond·ing, cor·re·sponds.

1)To be in agreement, harmony, or conformity.
2)To be similar or equivalent in character, quantity, origin, structure, or function: English navel corresponds to Greek omphalos. See Synonyms at agree.
3)To communicate by letter, usually over a period of time.

"With whom he is often compared" seems a heck of a lot clearer, tho. And, if she had said, "With whom he corresponded with," we get into some serious grammar issues, since only midwesterners (and more specifically, Chicagoans) are allowed to end sentences and phrases with prepositions.

Thank you. My point exactly. I was using Socratic irony, not questioning the point Porter was making (actually I agree with her comparison) but she phrased it poorly, didn't she?

I also stooped to the ignoble 'pun' on the word 'medium', to my deep and abiding shame.

So much for using subtlety and gentle humour. I guess I should have just baldly stated that Ms Porter either needed to proofread and revise much more carefully, or at the very least, find an editor who was on the ball. Good writers usually aim for clarity and avoid ambiguity, at least in non-fiction genres. Well, Todd is the exception in this as in most things!

I'll remember this should I be tempted from lurkdom again. Thanks for the lesson anyway, Levi and Star.

Since when did blunderers become such perfectionists in grammar and the like. What a hoot! Personally speaking, I like what she had to say especially since she actually had something interesting to say.

I'd ask, "Are you new here?" But I know you aren't, Janet - because I've enjoyed reading your posts for a long time! Maybe my question should be... "Do they keep you chained to this thread?" Some of the biggest Blunder fights that I remember have been about words, whether about word choice or the location where they were used. They get instigated by... well, that's not important, 'cuz I imagine that the grammar discussion ended with the last lecture.
