It was on April 23, 1993 (I meant to post this yesterday) that union organizer and labor leader Cesar Chavez, passed away in his sleep.
Cesar Chavez formed the United Farm Workers and was able to organize a strike against the growers to obtain union contracts and improve working conditions for agricultural laborers. Chavez fasted, marched, rallied, boycotted in his ongoing commitment to social change. Chavez is honored for his unselfish commitment to the principles of social justice and respect for human dignity.
Since his untimely death on 4-23-93, Chavez has been recognized around the world with numerous honors, including the United States highest civilian honor, bestowed upon him by President Clinton in 1995. In addition, on September 18, 1997, LIFE Magazine inducted Chavez into the LIFE Hall of Heroes, calling Chavez the "Ghandi of the fields, who rose to become one of America's greatest forces in the labor and civil rights movements.

I remember when he died. Just after he died we went to an Arlo gig, & I remember Arlo mentioned Ceasaer Chavez death in the gig between some songs & he seemed so sad about it. Poor dear looked like he wanted to cry but was trying to be really brave. I think I was a program on Chavez on PBS or something once. Sounds like he did alot to help his people out.
