Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin' it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out.

(Hi, Ruthie!)

A straggling few got up to go deep in despair.
The rest clung to that hope which spings eternal in the human breast;
They thought if only Casey could but get a wack at that-
We'd put even money now with Casey at the bat.

the O's signed Sosa as I yelled at the TV screen, "we need pitching" but we can't compete with the Bronx money bags for that special commodity

Maybe, but you're privy to a trade that's on a par with the trades of Aaron, Mays, or the Babe. The Sosa trade is likely to become known as one of the most important in baseball history, one you'll tell your grandchildren about. After all, the guy has had half of the 6 greatest home run-hitting seasons in Major League history.

It's hard to understand why the Cubs soured on Slammin' Sammy. Sure, his production declined last year, but it was a decline that woulda led the Pirates in homers. I guess they didn't believe he was really sick when he left the ball park during the final (meaningless) game of the 2004 season, but if one checks his record, he's not a guy to sit out much. By my math, since 1993 (excluding the strike year of '94), Sosa has averaged 149 games played per year.

Sosa has always reminded me of Roberto Clemente, the greatest player the game ever saw, & who I was lucky enough to watch during my youth. Sosa resembles him just a little, wears his number, has adopted his philosophy of using his fame to do charitable work & make life better for others, & plays with the same fierce pride that Clemente did.

That fierce pride is gonna propel Sammy into a great season. Who knows---maybe the O's won't need much pitching with Sammy knockin' in the runs. Don't be surprised if it happens.

(but I had to cheer for The Knights so Pops could win the penant and the team of course, sorry Joe)

No problem, Louise, The Natural is a great movie. Some say it was based on the life of Shoeless Joe Jackson, & I won't dispute that, but the part where Roy Hobbs is shot by a lady is straight from the life of 1940's Cubs 1B Eddie Waitkus.

Coz of your interest in the Pirates & Forbes Field, you might wanna check out the original Angels in the Outfield from 1951. It was filmed at Forbes Field. It's in B&W & it's corny by today's standards, but you won't see better footage of ol' Forbes anywhere else.

The Hollywood folks had a pay station & had paid the locals who sat in the stands at Forbes during the filming. Forbes Field is located in Pittsburgh's Oakland section, an area famous for its frauds & scam artists. To this day there are still tales of Oakland guys getting in line several times to get paid.

(Edited to add that last illuminating paragraph.)

well thanks for the pep talk. and its not like we got Albert Bell (the last great bonehead move of the O's (we gave up Palmeiro at the time). I wont argue about Clemente because I always liked that guy and Sosa's swing doesn't look nearly as powerful, Frank Robinson (a good O's trade)comes close to the best in my books

Well we got Palmeiro back and Sosa can swing and melvin Mora is awesome

But We still need pitching, why can't we get the Unit or Schilling (oh ya, we had him once) Alas, I'll still be in the stands.

Frank Robinson's name never seems to come up when folks start running down lists of the game's greatest players. What's up with that? A good RF who hit 586 homers--what's not to like?

Yeah Joe, I remember Shoeless Joe from "Field of Dreams". Thanks for the other info. And I'll definatly get a copy of "Angels" to see The Wall. I only got interested in the Pirates cos of you Joe!! AAARRRRRRR!!

But Flynn preceded Casey, as did also Jimmy Blake,
And former was a lulu and the latter was a cake;
So upon that stricken multitude grim melancholy sat,
For there seemed but little chance of Casey's getting to the bat.
