Haven't been to 'Sliberty all that much, but been to Buffalo Blues, across the tracks. Anyway, Penn produces a decent Bock in the winter months, plus they have live music almost every nite of the week. A real good variety too.

I don't spend any time in E's'liberty, either, just felt like seeing "E's'liberty" on a message board!

Ruthie, only claims to fame? Cains Ballroom (the real home of Bob Wills and Western Swing), Byrone Berlines Music Shop in Guthrie (Berline and Hickman are almost always there pickin'). Cowboy Hall of Fame (Catch a real Rodeo if you can when in OK)Okie-Mex, Nino's is my favorite because it is the family heir of El Charitto's from the 60's (dating to the 40's) in Capital Hill and everybody knows its better than Tex-Mex stuff! There's also a good gourmet Mexican down on 50the and Shartell in OKC! It's the family that originally opened Mino's (can't recall the name the spot now). And Barbeque! Best dry smoked Barbeque in the world (don't be fooled by any Texas claims on BBQ either)!!!

Don't be cuttin' OK short!

PSBeaty!! WOW, You REALLY do know OKIEVILLE! Nino's, mmmmmm, YUMMMMY! Havent been up there for a few years. & Damned straight about BBQ, are you referring to TOM's, on N.E. 10th, or there abouts? BEST I've ever had, & his cole slaw, W/dressing on the side, makes the veggies Xtra crunchy!

My Dad actually SAW Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys @ The Cains Ballroom, waaaaay back when he was a youngster! And I am hopin' to run up to Tulsa to the Cains, very soon, the Red Dirt Rangers, & several other GREATS are playing there in the weeks/months to come!

I didnt MEAN to cut Oklahoma short....seems if ya dont KNOW what we have to offer, some might find it difficult to believe, that Oklahoma is MORE than just OK! You have NO idea how very much I more than appreicate your setting me on the TRUE path!!!!
Next time you come south, you MUST see & experience The Spook Light!! Mighty cool indeed!
OH, as far as Rodeos are concerned Tom Furguson was from Mudville also, I sold him a gun when I was in H.S. working at Wal-Mart! Very nice man, indeed!

And we must never forget, The Cookson Hills, where some infamous folk hung/hid out in the '20 &'30s! 'Pretty Boy Floyd', a great & true tune!
Thanks PSB!! You are a good buddie! & A Good Oklahoma Son!
I just didnt wanna brag too much, but sure glad YOU didnt mind! Thanks!!
Edited 4 spelling, & Maybe WE need an Oklahoma Thread!!!

How did I miss that last post? I was so busy with holiday preparations I guess I'd lost track of when I'd visited last.

The 7th inning stretch was invented by Pres. William Howard Taft, who really hadn't set out to invent anything. He got up in the middle of the 7th inning & stretched, & the fans followed suit, figuring if the President did something, they should do it, too. (Those were simpler times, huh?) Subsequently, the stretch became a baseball tradition.

Taft was also the 1st person ever to throw out a ceremonial 1st pitch.

Hey Ruthie

You say the Red Dirt Rangers are going to play the Cains! I am glad to here of their recovery. I also noticed that Randy Crouch is playing with them at times now. Do you know Randy? Man talk about a wild show. I used to catch the Flyin’ Horse Opera (“We know a place where the horses all have wings! pick it third eye”) in the 70’s at a little bar called the Bar Ditch in Stillwater. Man, Randy and that flying horse would get that place rockin’ with a music that was sort of a cosmic psychedelic blues grass and the Opera lasted for ever it seemed (and he played it along time there with the crowds he got, almost 100 folks could pack in their and he would get 101). You can get part of the Opera (The Epic) as an MP3 Download from Randy’s site (check it out, it sounds like it did in the 70’s). If the crowd weren’t rowdy enough for Randy he would always threaten to play his trombone! There were other bands that played there, notably Welch and Long that were previously Blue Rose Café. Kevin and Pat lived on Castro Street in Norman next to my brother’s house. Kevin moved to Nashville and sort of made it big. He plays the Blue Door now. The Blue Rose got together there and did a recent tribute to Pat who passed recently. I remember Kevin got a job as guitar player with Vince Gill (another Okie from Norman who I saw play the Crossroads Mall once). Used to see Vince with Mountain Smoke back when they did a rousing rendition (in the Blue Grass style) of Coming into Los Angeles (My vinyl copy of the Mountain Smoke Album with a very young red eyed Vince Gill with shoulder length hair was lost in the great sewer snoid battle)! The Smoke used to play the Paradise Ballroom, another itty-bitty bar (capacity only about 70) that was out on northwest expressway on about May Ave or so! I saw Emmylou there with the Hot Band with Albert Lee! Holy Crap that was good. I also saw Sonny and Brownie there (Brownie had family in North OKC), and Earl Scruggs Revue (That Randy can Flat pick) and John Mayall. That was a great place. I have a Greg Burns rendering of the Paradise advertising that Emmylou show! (You know Greg Burns?) Since you are from the Northeast part of the state I can recall a couple of big ones up there. I saw Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys at Cains before (in the days when they had a mechanical bull in the place). Alvin also played the Bar Ditch regularly. If you read about my conversation with my daughter you may recall I did the Hokie Pokie waiting to be fingerprinted. That happened in Inola (Old Black Fox is Dead and Gone!). Also (one more) there was a Festival in Eureka Springs Arkansas in May of ’73, A Folkfair with Nitty Gritty, John Hartford, Scruggs Revue, Lester Flat, Mance Lipscomb, Jimmy Driftwood, Clifton Chenair (the daddy), and a long haired Ramblin’ Jack (I swear long hair). Oh ya, did you ever go to Winfield for the Flat Pickin championship. That was the first place I ever saw Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers. And Bryan Bowers singing the Jack Daniels and Hash song! And 48 hours at Atoka, with Willie and Waylon (with Reggie Young) and Jerry Lee Lewis (in ’77 the Killer was still very very wild) along with Jerry Jeff and Gonzo’s (boy he was drunk that day, no way they let him plug in his guitar that day), Ray Wiley Hubbard, Rusty Weir! But a true Oklahoma classic moment was when Brewer and Shipley sang One Toke Over the Line on Ho Ho the Clown (Brewer is from Midwest City). I saw Brewer at the Deli in Norman. Also, Willis Alan Ramsey, the first time I saw him was with a Leon Russell extravaganza in Tulsa right after he created Shelter Records (that was ’72 I believe). He sang all those songs off that first album (there is goin’ to be a second I hear, he’s been in the studio (old joke)). I also saw Arlo (two shows) on thanksgiving night (1985 or 86 I believe) in the Boomer theater in Norman (it is now an office building) Where he sang Alice’s Restaurant and it was the first time I heard the Chip Carter Variation (“I new he had heard my song”) with the significance of the 18 minute gap! Look at what you did Ruthie, stimulating these Okie memories! THis is Joe's Pittsburgh Zone! I'll go now!

Hey PSB!!

Dont believe I've met Randy. But I saw Willis Allen at the Boomer, also! And John Prine at the Sooner, great show, during at terrific thunderstorm!

I dont think Leon has his studio up at Disney anymore. That was such a big deal when we were young, out joy-riding, go to Grand Lake around Disney. Some times ya'd see Leon walking or driving down the street! Never got to talk w/him.

The Rangers have been back on the road since October, their 1st gig was in Mudville, a street dance, I couldnt make it up there. They are playing the Wormy-Dog, in OKC this week! And, I believe the Blue Door in January, not 100% sure.

You memtioned so many greats, in your post, didja ever see Ace Moreland? He & a guy by the name of Steve Gaines played all the itty-bitty dives up in the north part of the state! And Steve's sister, Cassie would Subsitute teach (when not on the road) at our H.S. That was pretty cool!

Did you attend RockLahoma? I didnt, but lived on the corner of Duffey & Jenkins, so it was like I was there!

Terry 'Buffalo' Ware, who also plays w/the Rangers plays most Monday nights at the Deli, need to run over & see him. Such a nice guy!

I have this grin, coz of your post, & I think it'll be awhile before it goes away! Thanks so much, PSB! NOW ya gotta come 'home' at LEAST for the Woody Fest! Keep thinking good Oklahoma thoughts! & POSTING them! I doubt if Joe will mind.
Do ya mind, Joe??

Ruthie

I know Buffalo pretty well. Well, actually I know hios sister pretty well she used to party with our crowd back in the days I spentt in Norman (remember the Whale and the Flea? the Reggae/Hendrix band at the Deli, or Fontanelli's Bar). I will definitely be back soon and we will have to get together hopefully for the Okemah thing!

PS I was at both those shows you mentioned as well as two Prine shows at the Boomer (the Common Sense tour had him with a great band including in fact Reggie Young). I also saw Willis at Town Tavern but that, I reckon, was before you moved to Norman. I have seen Willis alot and I am still hoping for that second album! And, i don't care what anyone says, when he does Muscrat Love, It works! Oh Ya Baseball, THe 70 89'ers had Ceasare Geronimo and John Mayberry, lotta homeruns that year!

Heck, no! The moderators get paid the big bucks to worry about that kinda stuff. Truthfully, my threads mean nothing to me.

I do recall, now that PSB has mentioned 'em, seeing an 89ers game on TV in the '80's, back when the USA network used to show a minor league game of the week. I was surprised to see Steve Kemp, who had recently been released by the Pirates, playing for them.

Louise, you'll recall that around my anniversary we were discussing who the top 5 husbands in the world are, & you said your husband belonged in that list. If he willingly goes along with that Blunderite journey that you've just mapped out, there's no question that he would be the undisputed #1 husband in the world!
