So sorry to hear that Terrie. Blunder prayers on the way. People say some wierd shit when the end comes. I have bad memory's of me Mom, but then again, because of some of the crazy stuff she came up with, it left me to wonder???

* she seemed to be in two places near the end. After rallying around, making sure she wasn't alone, she chose a time to leave, when most all of us were on a smoke break.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dad. You, he and your family are in my prayers.
I'm glad you see some of the odd thoughts that come out at these times as a way to bring a smile.
I remember going to visit my grandmom in the hospital one day, in June, and hearing from down the hall as we approached her and my aunt belting out Christmas carols. Just because she felt like it.

Sorry I hadn't posted before this Terrie - I've been pretty wrapped up in the stuff with my own dad.

But I'll also be praying for peaceful days and an easy time for however long he's still with you. Sorry to hear things have gotten so rough.

Marian called a little while ago, she called 911 at 4 AM and he's in the ER. Bowel obstruction and breathing problems. Will get back to you later.

Terrie - I am SO sorry to hear about your father. I am sending peaceful, comforting vibes to your father, your family and also to you. It's not easy, been there and done that. It's SO stressful and painful. One thing you MUST do is to take care of yourself. I have a feeeling that he would want you to do that. Prayers and comforting vibes are on the way ...

Thanks, friends... here's what's going on:

My father finally asked to go to the ER at 4 this morning with an impacted bowel. According to him, he's constipated, but there's nothing else wrong. He actually asked Marian to play roto-rooter and now is angry with her because had she'd done what he'd asked, he wouldn't be in the hospital now. Can you believe this?

So Ellen and I went to the hospital and our brother Marc came down too. Marc and I haven't spoken in over a year and even then it was with a lot of hostility. Dad said, "I can't believe it took me being constipated to bring Terrie and Marc into the same room at the same time."

My father had already pulled out his IV "because I don't need it and they weren't doing anything with it anyway." He had been given his first solu-medrol treatment through the IV and there was some talk of putting a breathing tube down him if he resisted the CPAP machine. They also talked about a feeding tube. Ellen and I reject the breathing tube but were willing to think about the feeding tube.

But we would have preferred he allow the reinsertion of the IV line. I explained the necessity of having access in case of an emergency, the need for hydration and the IV steroids. I told him that Michael's been in the hospital on IV steroids and it's better to only be stuck once (or twice in my father's case) than each time they have to administer something. He still refused.

Ellen finally spoke up about the DNR designation that Marian, Ellen, Marc and I had decided out in the hallway earlier. My father, however, doesn't want to be DNR! But he refuses a simple IV line!

Then... should he be in a "coma, vegetative state or brain dead," we must wait for 30 consecutive days of such state for 24 consecutive hours during those 30 consecutive days and get 2 neuro consults before we can remove life support. So if on day 29, his eyes flicker open, we have to begin the count all over again!

So, life support is ok once he becomes "brain dead" but not while he's alive! This is one for the books!

Terrie...i'm so sorry you and your family are going through so much conflict and sorrow.......it is such a difficult time.....the answers, when they come, are different for everyone...so i'll only say that the hospice counselors (there may be some in the hospital)...helped my Dad sort his confusion and me, mine and my grief....

...whatever the answer is for you and your family, i will pray that you all find clarity and peace as soon as possible......

More prayers just said & hope all goes well for him & you & the family...
