Late Saturday night, on our way to our motel near the Grand Canyon of PA, Michael said that he saw a meteor shower. I looked up and there they were, amazing colors, lasting a long time. I pulled off the road so we could watch.

Did anyone else see this?

RUSSIAN FIREBALLS: Sky watchers in eastern parts of North America saw an impressive display of meteor-like objects around 10:52 p.m. EDT on June 26th. These were fragments of a Russian rocket motor breaking apart in Earth's atmosphere. The pieces were bright, slow-moving, with "incandescent sparking tails," according to some observers. Kevin Martin snapped this picture of two fireballs over Ontario, Canada. "Truly neat!" says Martin.

There's a Grand Canyon in PA??? I didn't know that. Or is that the latest nickname for Pittsburgh's budget deficit?

Apparently our governor didn't know either. He's just begun airing a "things to see/do along Route 6" commercial.

We were there 25 years ago, in the Fall. We were going to be in the "area" at a bluegrass festival this past weekend, so I thought it might be fun to stay overnight and re-visit the canyon. There are a lot of really neat things up in the Williamsport/Wellsboro area.

The canyon was formed by the retreat of the ice sheets between the already existing mountains. Pine Creek runs north/south between the 2 State Parks that rim the canyon. Colton Point is the west rim and Leonard Harrison is the east rim. Colton has rustic overlooks alonside the main road. Leonard Harrison has a small welcome center with a video, picnic tables, small souvenir shop (t-shirts, books, and magnets), and several overlooks that are paved for walking, along with several hiking and bike trails.

Access to both parks is from Route 6 between Wellsboro and Ansonia, or you can access Leonard Harrison from Route 660 south of Wellsboro.

Williamsport is on my list of places to go one of these years (for the Little League World Series), so I'll make a mental note to check out the Grand Canyon of PA while there. Very interesting!

I went to Williamsport once in the 70's. I think Arlo might've done a show there a few yrs ago...
