Sounds like the storm surge will be a monster. Get out if you are that close Kitty.

I was one of the last people off the island. The bridge was closed at 7pm. I never did get any good packing done, ended up doing my own version of that scene in "The Jerk"...you know the one...."...I don't need anything...except....this....and...."
Anyway, off the beach, and evacuated safely to.....Morehead City, on the other side of the bridge.
It started to rain about an hour ago. A few minutes ago I went outside and felt the first real wind bands come through. The air is electric, wonderful, and even though we all know we're in for some long hours of the big wild stuff, we are well familiar with the routine.
There are TV station people here from as far away as...well, wherever the BBC is from...
Over at the Shereton, Miami TV people set up with floodlights (hee hee,,,get it,...?) and cameras, etc. They had a great time watching the surfers jump off the fishing pier with their boards...
So, just when I was ready to "hunker down" here in this nice sturdy brick home, I remembered that I forgot to close the bathroom window at my house on the beach. oops. I was lucky...very lucky...the police let me go back over the bridge to close my window if I PROMISED to not take a side trip to the edge of the water,,,they know us well....
Levi...I love what you said,,,,I've been thinking all day about how all of us here have felt something different in this storm....I suspect that it's the first time in too long that we have something other than war to think about. This is a good hurricane. When it get's in the neighborhood of any of you others, check it out!!
More when I can....

Kitty, I'm glad you're in a place more safe to meet Isabel; which you're probably doing about now. You're in our thoughts and hearts.

Glad Kitty made it to somewhere safer. We hoped she would make it to a safer place. Here they have closed everything & our local schools are closed Thurs & Fri. They are talking about Hurricane force winds & tornado watches. Yikes...

I found some wecams of some of the Beach areas on the net:

Cape Hatteras, NC:

Duck, NC;

Wirghtsville Beach & other beach areas:

Good luck to those in the storms areas... <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/peace.gif" width=16 height=16> Stay safe...

The title of this thread sounded way too familiar, a song? Took me all night, reciting it to finally remember (looking up lyrics on the web helped).

Great title, Kitty! Thanks for making me remember a CD I wanted to get to replace a well-worn album.

Glad you're on safer ground, and remembered to close that window in time!

Terrie

My son called yesterday from Chesapeake, VA and said that all the "higher-ups" had already left the base in control of all the Privates, and they had sandbags in front of the doors--they're staying put. He's going to experience his first hurricane up close and personal. Kitty, this is the son that you almost got to meet in Carolina--now he's stationed in VA for more Marine training, then off to who knows where!

Glad you got to leave for higher ground.

It is raining buckets here. One of the windows in the bedroom was leaking so we have towels & containers to catch the rain. The storm is all that's on tv around here. To watch my shows I have to watch the feeeds on my big satellite dish. The during the ads I flip back to local news coverage. On the news they said homes have crashed in the Nags Head area & fell into the ocean. & They said that in Atlantic beach where Kitty is things are bad there & the hurricane is there. Wishing her &everyone else near the hurricane all the best & that they stay safe... I hope we don't lose power. My mom said she almost did in her end of the county twice...

I think that the Rainey family can probably handle the rain better than most of us. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/confused.gif" width=15 height=22> <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15>

We survived Isabel. My folks lost power after 5 & later theri phone kept ringing busy so I suspected it was down. So I called the phone co to report it & sho nuff it was.. We lost power at 7:25 after dinner. But our phone is still working. I can get online with a laptop. To hear the tv news we had to listen with Mike using a walkman & me with a pen radio. I don't know who was the crazierst during the storm, the dog who kept waliking out side like it was nothing (I had to ask her to gon on & get in her house), the telemarketer who called during the storm & Mike said to her "Hey lady, we can't talk to ya right now cuz we have a hurricane going on. Bye", or Mike who threw the dessert in the sink by accident. I had made a diabetic lemon pudding & had heated it up in the microwave. Found it in the sink with water & dish detergent in it (pre-electrtric going out). He found it in the microwave & thiought it was a dirty dish & put it in to soak. I was so upset but the storm calmed that down real quick heh-heh. The guy at the phone co said I was a good duaghter to have my folks phone checked so I could make sure they were okay in the hurricane. Mike brother Bill & his wifes phone was out too cuz Mike tried to call them & busy signal too. Same for his cousin Sheila & her hubby Bill who live in Rivers Edge. My mom was able to call me on her cell phone. Usually she can't get out from her house so she was lucky to be able to get out on it. I couldn't heaer her very well as she was so garbled but it appears they are okay but some trees are down there. They probably won't know till Fri how bad it is. She talked like they won't be able to get out yet. But my folks seem to be okay & we are too. Hope you all are okay. We prayed & rode it out. We'll see on anhy damage tomorrow but none so far...

Hope you all in the storm are fine & didn't get too much damage...
