Thanks for the warm welcome. I do not call myself mikey Mrs G. labeled me with that. I will enjoy Nyc. I am very use to the streets in NYC as I use to drive a tour bus there about three times a week. Hope to meet you at one of the shows. Michael

Funny you should mention driving in NYC. I was there yesterday (as some of you already know). After Michael was discharged from the ER (see other post), we kept our promise of taking him to see Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty.

I am truly amazed at how many accidents we did NOT see on NY's crowded streets! Although there are some lane markings, no one seems to care. They drive where-ever they want... if there's an inch in front of my car, a taxi, bike, pedestrian or even a BUS will try to squeeze in there.

I finally bullied a bus into submission! And I was damned proud... after the day I'd had with Michael I wasn't about to let some big bad bus bully me! At that moment, I felt like a true New Yorker!

In Times Square, a cop was next to me at a traffic light. Now, for those of you who have never had the "pleasure" of "driving" in Manhattan, let me explain. No one really "drives".. cars just slide an inch at a time. And they tend to slide sideways also... so here I was, going nowhere, bright lights the extent of which boggles the mind, and I have this cop next to me.

I rolled down my window and asked him, "aren't there any rules here?" To which he responded, "Nope, anything goes!"

Then, because I'd seen all I cared to of Broadway traffic, I asked him if there's an "easier" way to get down to Battery Park. His answer was a question, "are you driving?" To which I laughingly stated, "I'm TRYING to."

When the light turned green and we were able to "inch by inch" begin moving, the cop called out to me, "Remember, close your eyes and put the pedal to the metal."

After turning off Broadway, heading toward 12th Avenue (also known as West Side Avenue and 9A), Michael asked if skateboarders and bikers were allowed on the sidewalks. I told him, no, they might mow down a pedestrian, as 2 cops jaywalked right in front of my moving car! Just amazing!

Michael did get to see Lady Liberty as well as 3 views of the Site of the Former World Trade Center Towers. We got him some "souvenirs" and he signed a large memorial on Fulton Street (near Church Street). Today he's happily wearing his FDNY cap and he looks just like a little Guiliani!

I no longer hate NYC. After years and years, I've finally figured out how the streets/avenues work, and how to aggressively drive to save my life. I navigated side streets like a true New Yorker.

Oh, give me that small-town country road any day!

I wouldn't want to drive in NYC. I went there in the late 60's & cars were double parked esp in Manhattan. If you were on the inside you couldn't get out. No one could get on the inside & you could hardly find a parking space. 2 cabs got into an accident & one cabbie got out of the car & started cussing out the other cabbie. This held up traffic. A delivery truck turned over on the freeway holding up traffic. On the other hand, you could freely & safely walk around Queens for hours which I did. We got ice cream off the GOOD HUMOR man in Queens. Yum! I had gone with my folks & we were visiting my late 2nd cousin who lived in a suburb of Queens called Huntsville. My mom kept getting the Chrysler Bldg & Empire State Bldg mixed up with each & only I knew which was which. Finally the day we were to leave NYC she realized I was right but ti was too late to go. I told he we should've gone to see both. She swore she'd never drive in NYC again. So the other coupla times we went to NYC it wasn't direcely in there but just passing thru on the George Washington bridge to get to another state furthur north...
