The 1980 team was anything but "random",and they were amazing!. In fact while watching the opening ceremonies with my wife, I predicted who would light the torch. It was a good call and a no-brainer as far as I was concerned. First, this is the first winter games to be held in the USA since the 1980 Lake Placid games, and since the 1980 USA hockey team, consisting of college kids and no pros scored one of the biggest upsets not only in hockey history, but in sports history, they were the natural and logical choice. That team was and is what the Olympics should be about, and what they did will never be repeated with pros now able to play in Olympic competition, sadly. Also, the games should be represented by the athletes, not politcians that may be heros to some. It's about the athletes, and the Olympics are the games of the world, not merely the host country.
So, in short, the choice was one that could be applauded by athletes, flag wavers and true fans everywhere, and the proper and wise choice indeed!

See Shannon, didn't Todd warn you about me?

A slight correction to my last post: Vanetta took home the first Winter Olympics gold. I don't know if it was the first medal or not.

About the opening ceremonies -- from what they said at the time (and that's all I have to go on) the reasoning behind the U.S. hockey team lighting the torch was to emphasize how much can be achieved when people work together as a team, and to de-emphasize the importance of any one individual over another. They wanted to make a statement about overcoming impossible odds through cooperation, perseverance, and unity. Apparently that even carried over into the choice of entertainers: anyone who wanted special treatment, or who came in with the attitude that their name was bigger, better, or deserved higher billing, was told, "Don't call us. We'll call you..."

I hafta' say, I loved having the "first family" show up at the closing. Mr. and Mrs. T-Rex were something else again.

Donny and Marie huh? Funny thing is, last night at hockey( I play every sunday night), one of the goaltenders that I play with is a young guy about 22 years old, and he is a major KISS fan. This guy loves KISS so much that he has KISS tattoos and stuff. Well, anyway, I was busting his chops(in friendly lockerroom way) last night. I told him that a bunch of us were gunna take him out drinking and stuff, and we were gunna get him really shitfaced, and then bring him to get a new tattoo next to his big KISS tattoo. We then asked him how shocked he would be if he woke up the next day with a Backsteet Boys, a Captain and Tenelle or a Donny & Marie Tattoo next to his KISS tattoo. Needless to say, he don't wanna go drinking with us.

You notice ol' selectively oblivious doesn't select to be oblivious when you tread on hockey. Not that I don't agree with him. He makes sense. Now I'm scared...

Remember that it's "selectively oblivious" not just plain 'ol "oblivious".
That's what makes ALL the difference!
Now once you folks you are "selectively un-oblivious" figure that one out, Utopia might just spring up!

It's not just a hockey thing by the way!

Yea, Todd, I sure do, then I grin the same grin I grinned when Sarah Lee said to me, "You know you are crazy, don't you?" ...she smiled back & nodded...I'll betcha she has that mirror conversation, too, sometimes too, just listen to "Tarantula" & you'll know
Thanks, Larry, glad to hear you do too, anyway, Todd, Sparky liked my idea for the new event, how about calling it "Curl-dancing"?
(heehee, 1570 -some posts, & that's the 1st time I've ever used the "quote button)

Oh, I'm sure I'll be feeling much better in a day or two. I'm better today than I was yesterday. I just wish the fever would break, already. I got my annual flu shot and everything, but this strain wasn't covered apparently.

OK, I also wish I could go out and buy some Thera-Flu or NyQuil, and a couple of cans of chicken soup, or something. On the other hand, for once I'm not entirely foodless and med-less. I have aspirin. I have toast and apples. I even had some power bars on hand for the first couple of days -- which is a lot more than I usually have for getting through these things.

Since I am feverish, I'm allowed to ask: Todd, you did see the huge T-Rex's didn't you? I wasn't really referring to Donnie and Marie, although you were quick and it was a good one.

Hmmm, Pat & Larry, independently agree to be selectively un-oblivious, about hockey, AND agree on hockey's seriousness, AND, Todd labels me, as a goofy shit, like he's the Prince of Normal...strange days, indeed, must be a full earth, on some other planet!!
