Hope it's not against protocol to post this here. But I figured that if I'm already on "The List" for posting here, I may as well go all out and post stuff for peace vigils as well (another "List"-able activity). And seeing how Winsted, CT isn't too far from Great Barrington, Massachusetts, maybe some area Blunderites might want to attend some of these.

For those who feel like attending, the Winsted Area Peace Action has
regularly scheduled vigils on the Winsted town green, right next to
Northwestern State Community College at the intersection of Rt. 8 & Rt. 44 (that's the old Rt. 8 going north from Winsted). They are scheduled as follows:
Dec. 19, 2004
Jan. 2 & 16, 2005
Feb. 6, 2005

All are on the Sundays indicated above from Noon to 1:00 PM. I won't be able to make the one on 12/19/04 due to Yule observance, but plan on attending others barring any unforeseens. They could use a few more warm bodies.

Just an update on the Winsted, CT peace vigils, if anyone's interested. Finally found out that they are held on the first and third Sundays of each month, which is why the dates seem to skip a week here and there.

Last Sunday's (1/02/05) had twelve people instead of the eight at the first one I attended. Yay! Still, there was only one college-age person there who happened to be there with her mother. Over half of the people there were older than me and I'm 53! A very dangerous crowd of rabble rousers! Still, we only got one drive-byer flippin' us "the bird". A couple of older guys driving by yelled (politely), "Bush won!". I yelled back (politely), "That's why we're here!" Most folks were, again, beeping their horns & giving the thumbs up or peace sign. I reckon that's a good sign (pun intended).

I was talking to a guy who's been going to them for some time now. An odd thing, he said that before the war in Iraq the whole front end of the Green was lined with people protesting, but since the war started the numbers have dropped! You'd think that now that the war's happening, the same people who didn't want it to start would be even more into wanting it to end, no? Go figure!

I may have kinda an answer for ya Cpt. Our first march in Brisbane (pop 1.6 million, average age 33, 26% of residents born over seas)in Feb 2003, to protest the proposed invasion of Iraq, brought 50 thousand people (I live an hours drive north in another shire/county so some people would have come from out of the Met. area)of all ages, colors, walks of life onto the streets down town. There were only a handful of extreme radical troublemakers (which is of course where the media focused, unfairly).
At the end we were asked to re-assemble at 4 P.M. the day the bombs started to drop. It was 1pm on an afternoon when I heard the news and jumped on the next train to the city. Only 4 thousand people turned up (well I thought, it is a work day so hard for people to get there). But at the next march on the Sunday only 5 thousand turned up. I had already come to a conclusion from my own experiences over the last weeks and talked to others to confirm. I guess people could't take being told they were supporting S.H. and not the troops etc. etc. At that time trying to convince people that there probably were no WMD's and of alterior motives was like trying to convince people that black is white. Of course that didn't stop me, and all that stuff has come out in the wash, so some people are now convinced that what we were saying in the marches was true after all, and that we all had fully supported the troops and wanted to save them, and innocent Iraqi citizens, from unjustified injury and death.
So..... maybe that's kinda what happened there??? Maybe you could ask some folks??

Well, it was down to four of us this past Sunday (1/16/05). May have had something to do with the temperature being sub-freezing. Brrr! My toes are still frozen!

Don't forget. Spend "Not one damn dime!" on Thursday to protest king George II's corrupt coronation.

It's a bit late for Connie to be talking about learning other languages and having conversations, not monologues, with other nations.... isn't it ?????? Like shuting the gate when the horse has already bolted!!
