It sounds like somebody forgot to pay the light bill for the northeastern part of the continent! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/uhoh.gif" width=15 height=15> Hope everyone is okay!

I remember a major blackout one summer (I was 11) and, at first, it was party-time for all the moms... until someone began feeling too hot and decided they should all go in to her house 'cos she had central. Once inside, they all realized how ludicrous that was, and they couldn't even open the fridge to get iced-tea. Talk about hot flashes LOL

On another note, many years ago, Arthur Hailey wrote a book called Overload. Among other things, it covers rolling brownouts and blackouts which are pre-planned.

My first thought was..."Baby boom in nine months"...but maybe it's too hot for that kind of nonsense.

Nah...never too hot for that kind of nonsense!

Was watching the images out of NY and talking to my sister on the phone. Everyone was walking, some across bridges! I said something about a baby boom in 9 months, but sis reminded me that, nah... they're all WALKING!

Too bad it's not an HD walk. That would be solved in no time!

Hope everyone is surviving okay. Been keeping up with it on the news. I heard reporter say that in one of the past big blackouts either 65 or 77 but I think they said it was 65, a bunch of folks had sex & the next yr the birth rate went up LOL!

We usually lose power when there's a thunderstorm or a snake gets up in the power station. Good luck to all affected & any blunderites affected by this & ADG too...

We got ours back around midnight. News says that lots of NYC is still down, but it'll probably come back during the course of the day. Sounds like most came through it very well. Hope that holds true as more reports come in.

It was almost surreal walking around Manhattan last night. No lights except for autos and the few buildings that have auxilliary generators. The streets very crowded with people walking home or just hanging out cause it was too hot indoors. Probably over a thousand people sitting on the steps of the main Post Office. Folks trying to hitch hike to Jersey at the approaches to the Lincoln Tunnel. Some stores stayed open serving their customers by candlelight. Bars seemed to be doing especially well. The only source of hot food the "dirty water dog" vendor on the corner was doing a booming business. Once nightfall set in the streets were so dark you could not see anyone until you were right on top of them. Everyone was hot but seemed to be in good spirits. We did manage to get the trains up and running about 2 3/4 hours after the event (Amtrak and NJ Transit, no LIRR) but service was very infrequent. When the lights went out rumors started almost immediately that this was a terrorist incident. People were very tense at first, but calmed down pretty quickly. Power was restored to most of Northern NJ by the time I got my train out of NY so the ride home was pretty much normal. However Reg says driving without traffic lights is really interesting.

We missed the blackout! Western Michigan (including us) and north still have power. East Our power went out for only a few seconds. Listened to a Detroit last night and this morning--still lots of traffic messes. On the news last night there was a great shot of a very dark New York overlooking brightly lit New Jersey. On the Today Show this morning, showed a couple (from Michigan) celebrating their 20th anniversary in NY. Said they ate at Tavern on the Green--they were serving hot dogs and hamburgers on the terrace.

JohnC. You do have a point. Tell Reg, Sue and I never got flipped off as much as last nite! (I guess when the intersection light is out, the first one there has the right of way. Least that's my wife's idea? lol)(THE cops quickly came to the rescue to avoid any road rage.

* I can't imagine the big apple all dark without power. Least it was under peacefull circumstance! Our little city did look wierd all black.

**The most beautifull thing we witnessed, sitting out on the back deck, was watching the lights in Prescott, Ontario, across the river in Canada. They got power before us, and it was like someone lighting a Xmas tree. House by house came back to life, as we know it. I thought of Sparky. NTM: That Twilight Zone episode where everyone freaks out, and the Aliens learn it doesn't take much for earthlings to turn on one another! (not that that happened. That only happens in works of fiction. Right?)

Tejas has it's own power grid. I feel so relieved now, she says ironically.

I had seen something about that on our news. Mike & I couldn't figure out why so many areas of the Northeast are tied together on the electric grid when Texas is all by itself. Seemed to us that with more on the grid there is more chance of more areas to go out. But hey we know nothing about how those things work...
