Just dropped in to say hello, things have been rather strange here at home so I have not been on the net very much....but somehow I think if I tell my story here it just might make life seem more reasonable to others.

Last week, I got a call from the V.A., telling me to come down as my aunt was near death (she was a WW2 Vet served in both Army and navy), well as I was there she died, the V.A. wanted the room for someone else and wanted her stuff out ASAP, so I was taking her stuff to the car when I got called to the front desk, the call was to tell me my dad's house was on fire,(he died last year and the house was rented out) on the way home I had a flat tire, anyway the inside of the house was burnt up and all the contents were lost, no insurance but then no loss of life either. The renter's grandchild had decided to kill her grandparents by catching the house on fire and she admitted this to the police, but here is where it gets weird to me, the grandparents want to sue me for their loss because I did not have a smoke detector in the room......any way I am glad all is well and my good buddy Todd is doing okay, that is the main thing the rest is just so much fluff and weirdness....

My condolences on losing your aunt. She must have been an astounding personality. It sounds like you've been going through the mill even before THE day.

thanks for your kind thoughts, but none of these things ever get me down, I just found it interesting that someone would want to sue me, I don't have any money and as far as I know there is no prison for the poor any more....

My aunt passed quickly and she was ready to go so I just rejoice in having known her, even as I find such happyness with you folks my extended family.

nate! bad week for you! sorry to hear about your aunt, but good that you could be there to wish her spirit onward.

is it a requirement of a 'landlord' of a single family home to provide for smoke detectors?? I guess that's the question you need to get answered first... and then be prepared to put the blame on the darling grandchild... probably would have disabled or stolen any smoke detector anyway, so what was the point? ANd thinking more about it (which is really giving me a headache this morning....) why sue you for a missing smoke detector????? <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/confused.gif" width=15 height=22> They all got out alive (were they even IN there at the time??) and the house was YOUR loss. Any loss of contents would be their problem, regardless, and smoke detectors wouldn't have stopped the fire, would they?? Damn, I'm just trying to be too practical this morning!

I too had wondered why a smoke detector was required, it's not, but having written rental contracts for years and years, I of course have an hard clad rental agreement that not only covers the smoke detector but has the renter paying all legal costs as well so maybe they have only awoken a sleeping tiger...

Smoke detectors work by detecting gas not smoke and I fear a smoke detector in one's ass might just go off to often to be of any use.
