But people mistake trade for inventory. It's not so much this romantic, Yankee Clipper Open Up Japan vision as just the same old robber barons from places like McDonalds, Ford, and Nike running partially completed merchandise up and down the NAFTA Freeway. What they're really after is a pre-emptive authority so governments cannot sue or tax them.

Nobody's against trade but a lot of people are against this shift from the discredited government tyranny to a sexy new corporate tyranny with a better advertising department.

As for the self-destructive streak in the left, I do think it's still a problem and I can't think of any solution. The good thing is that people won't submit blindly to the persuasive visions of strong leaders, but the bad thing is that people won't intelligently pursue the persuasive visions of strong leaders either. It's that same old problem. How do you take over without taking over?

Makes it hard to get much done, then of course there's always the problem of backing lost causes, then not having a left for a while.

there's a large rubberized rope, pulled tight, between material acquisition & social integrity, the challenge will be whether that social integrity is furthered enough to pull against global, planned acquisition forces

Oh, I've LOVED Adbusters magazine for years now. Its very funny, compelling, and informative. My favorite magazine along with The Sun.

Definatly recommend subscribing to Adbusters, or at least asking for a trial issue. Good stuff!

The first I knew of the Corporate Flag was last summer about this time, when it was being circulated to plaster all over L.A. for the gathering of the money class that the media for some reason kept calling a Democratic National Convention. I liked the image and used it in a couple of things.

I don't know its original source. Could even be Adbusters. Direct Action Network and Ruckus Society were circulating them too. A group which had trained in rope work and banner dropping hung a huge real flag someone had made. It was on the side of a 14 story building right next to the convention. They got busted before it was fully unfurled, but there are amazing pictures of the event all over the place.

I really like that billboard in New York. The corporations have plastered Manhattan from one end to the other with all their ridiculous mind control. Time to plaster back.

AdBusters has been at this kind of thing since the 60s. They used to be into using art (and artists!) to come up with completely convincing, professional looking, but fake ads that would deconstruct the real ones. You know, like that famous one where the Marlboro Cowboy is a skull smoking one of the things. There are also a couple of very slick TV commercials which the stations won't run (big surprise there) and a Planetary Buy Nothing Day that gets some minor publicity after Thanksgiving.

They've since hopped on the anti-corporate band wagon. Fine with me, if a little less noodly post-modern fun.

An example..... my heart & mind aren't here, today, they are in England, where the new MINI Cooper is going on sale, it's a modernized, upgraded version of the Austin Mini Cooper, made by BMW, this time in England! I had an orig Mini, when in the Army, in Germany, '66-68. I fell in love w/ the car then, not because of mind-numbing ads, but because the car was innovative, inexpensive and, a thrill, to drive.
US BMW dealers will have the MINI here in March 2002, and are being swamped by MINI fans, waiting lists are being compiled, all, without a dime of advertising, because the product (car) has it's own integrity

Mini's, are those those little tiny cars? I saw a show on PBS about how a group of their enthusiasts gather every fall in northern MN for a big cruising weekend.

Yes.One & the same lcj! the 1st front wheel drive sideways mounted engine car ever made, They 1st came out in '59, and the last orig version was made last year. Over 5 million sold in 41 years, world-wode w/ very few changes during that time. The new BMW version is 20% bigger but same concept & design, and, the new ones do 125mph! i want one!

You too, huh? The old Morris ones weren't exactly slow either. Car&Driver described them once as "small weapons." There was a twin engine one for a while. Didn't leave much room to sit, but would blow the doors off just about anything else in a straight line.
