Yeah, fan: A guy from Sri Lanka tried to blow up a plane enroute from Paris to Miami, but was subdued by the flight attendant and several passengers. She caught him trying to light his sneaker with matches, went for the matches, and suffered the only injury when he bit her. Three doctors on board kept him sedated for the rest of the trip.

What a year indeed.

Who are these people, and what are they doing in MY living room?

Hurray Fan...The mission was twarted....My hats off to vigilance!!! I've never flown, but I can see myself attacking an unknown subject, at an air-port...But in my case, the guy is only lighting a ciggarette....And I get the shit kicked out of me!!!! .ral

On a serious note, doe anyone think this could have been a decoy, for something worse. And when the decoy wasn't deployed, the REAL mission was aborted...

hmmm who knows rb, everything seems to be possible nowadays (noone would have dreamed of planes crashing into the world trade center and of such a series of attacks).. It's just horrible, hope the FBI will find out more about this man from Sri Lanka and ho
pe this will be the last attack (or planed attack) for a long, long time, or better: forever!!

Interesting to speculate about, but if he had enough plastique in his sneaker, he could easily have vaporized the entire plane, right? It doesn't take very much, from what I understand. What is it? An amount the size of a cigarrette lighter would be enough to do the trick? I never used to think such information would be all that important to keep in mind.

It's certainly empowering everyday people, all this suicide bombing. I bet airline personnel are taking up martial arts in droves, these days.

There are plenty of Muslims in and from Sri Lanka, I'm sure, and the Al Qaeda does seem to recruit its foot soldiers (especially the suicidal ones) from nice, middle class homes throughout the world. (It's gang membership on a global scale. Sheesh. Let's hope the Cripps, Bloods, etc., don't start getting expansionist ideas, huh? Ditto those Neo-Nazi groups in Idaho.) There are bound to be some copycat suicide-bombing attempts, by those seeking fame and the feeling that they belong to something larger. ("Me too! Me too!See: Those Al-Qaeda guys have nothing on me. I'm willing to die for the Jihad, too. The world will be sure notice me now ...") Well, I'm sure we'll find out what this latest one was all about, soon enough. Why am I dreading the Olympics so?

Aaaaaargh.

Maybe they should just have everybody travel naked. Yuukkkk. Maybe not. Maybe give us paper travel suits, like the nasty things at the doctor's office, but not open in the back.

Um...I was just thinking...

Maybe what we need here is a un-neutron bomb chamber that you pass through before boarding the plane. Then explosives, box cutters, tiny knives, implements of destruction would just disappear. Maybe even clothes. Maybe some of those passengers would be worth looking at. Might be worth finding out!

Apologies to Arlo....

Do you REALLY think that would stop a suicide bomber from hiding a bomb somewhere in his person rather than on his person???? I don't! Yuukkkkk is right!!!

Oh gee, Larry -- I don't know. What kind of underwear do you wear? It might look good on the outside.

I know whatcha mean, about the Olympics, Muffy, my fear is Times Square at Midnight Eve, not just a terrorist act, but the panic, if one is suspected....
