Ceashel: fishing takes on a whole new meaning in Afganistan...They just hide behind a bolder, and throw a hand granade, into the stream...Fish float to the top, by the barrel....Nice brown & rain-bow trout...

*kinda like Crocadlile dundee with his 1/2 stick of dynamite.

**Muffy that's a debatable thing the Peace Core...Your talking bout a guy that has a hard time keeping peace at home. Let alone another country.....Yes, maybe today's youth will never know what it's like, to worry about getting drafted.....I'm too young myself, as were all 57 classics....But we watched our older brothers go in hordes...Leaving us, with the immpression we'd be next....It's not a nightmare, I'd like to re-live...It seems like a dream to me now....

Thanx to all of you for posting answers to that question and I'm willing to look at both sides.., pat(and all the others) - Like most of you unfortunately I haven't got the answers .. In my opinion the past has shown us that the Americans have done many good things so far... I think they should keep interfering in other countries' policy, for the sake of democracy (Nobody knows what would have happened if the Americans hadn't interferes in the second World War and if they hadn't helpedthe people living in west Berlin when it was blocked off by the Soviets...
I think they should intervene but they shouldn't impose their values on other countries (But I know that this is a utopian concept and that it won't work)
And muffy I think you're perfectly right to say on the one hand we (or the Americans) should intervene in foregn affairs but on the other hand you (the Americans) supported totalitarian regimes.. If I had to make up my mind .. I think the Americans should keep interfeering in other countries because as history has shown us you (the Americans) did a lot of good things in the past....
I would prefer the "expansionism" policy
This is a very difficult thing to talk about and I hope I didn't do anybody any harm...
just thought it would be interesting to hear the opinion of "real" Americans because as a European you can't really judge that problem ..

Fan, yu bring a good point. People, not from the USA, surely think differantly. But hopefully, our indifferance can be worked out! We, surely will find out, as time unfolds. Hopefully thoughts and opinions can intertwine, and we can be, just 'that' much closer to World Peace. Even if it's an inkling.

***Back to the story AKA 'The Garden Song'
Can't think of a better one to spin, than the Pete & Arlo version. Arlo's inch by inch, philosophy (if I can call it that) THERE'S NO better in the world!!!! The older ya get, ya realize things don't (or didn't) happen overnight......

*Well some things do? My son did, I guess.?! But you get my main drift on this one fan!

fan, I don't think i realized you're European. Of course you didn't hurt anything. Right now most of us are asking ourselves a lot of questions, even if we seem to know exactly what we think. This event has turned a lot our thinking upside down, too, at least for some of us. Polls say that 90% of Americans support this war, and that's probably right, but you can bet that a good portion of us who do would never have thought we'd be supporting any war, not too long ago.

Fan, like Pat, I didn't realize you were in Germany. I started participating on arlo.net after 9/11 mainly because my world view was suddenly spinning out of control and I needed contact with people who can think and not just absorb what they get from the media. Far from hurting anything or anyone, your perspective is welcome and appreciated. As Pat said, many of us who thought we'd never be in support of a war are suddenly having to rethink everything about our relationship to the rest of the world. That discussion can be much more rich and meaningful if you'll stay around and add a non-Western-Hemisphere perspective. (Give us a kick in the pants if we're too "American.") Besides, I've learned you can make some good friends here.

Fan, I want to echo what Pat & Ceashel said, I know I value different perspectives. We run the risk in America of what's known as "me too-ism" and we are in danger of losing our sense of liberty and justice in the tide of patrotic fervor. Thanks for your posts, please continue.

Thank you all for these kind replies! It was great to read them! I'm glad I did`n't heart any feelings! Yes I'll try to continue posting on the message board forums (it took me quite some time until I found out that this one existed on Arlo.net..)
When I first heard of the attacks on the World trade center I was shocked (as probably all of you were) it was just incredible ,but after all it seems "so far away" I mean that most people who aren't Americans don't really feel the way you feel (just one example :my friend stayed in Washington for one year and she almost feels like an American now, her feelings were even stronger than ours and she felt verystrongly heart even though she didn't know anyone who died because of the attacks) what I wanted to say is that because of the attacks many Americans feel differently and as you said pat, 90% support the war against Afghanistan
I think that there are less people in Europe who support the war because they weren't affected "personally "...
Bumper you "took the words right out of my mouth" that's how I sometimes feel when I hear about the actions America takes or the things that happen in America.. But as I said I don't really know what I think about "all that" myself...
Thanx for making me feel welcome!!
It's great to talk to all of you and to get to know so many new people!!!

I have been viewing a lot of videos of late and I notice that each of them have an FBI Warning about not being for public viewing and such, It occured to me that perhaps with all the thousands of viedos out there the FBI might be to busy tracking them all to be available to combat terrorist, of course I could be wrong.

OBL is said to be dressed as a woman trying to flee the war, if so, which would make a better looking woman, OBL or our own Larry?

*spelling of burka is correct, Larry. You have now qualified for the State spelling bee semi-finals. Good luck!

Fan, thanks for your answer, as well. I, too, didn't want to hurt your feelings -- and didn't want you to think I was putting anything you said down -- which is why I brought all that up in the first place, of course.
Glad to see you're still here, and I'm also glad that you are interested to hear what "real" Americans think. It's very easy in this world to jump to conclusions, and you display both intelligence and common sense when you ask questions before reaching a conclusion. A lot of us get that backwards all too often. (And I use "us" in the largest, most inclusive sense possible.)

RB, I myself would not be likely to join the Peace Corps, although I know people who have. I do understand that there are many reasons for having problems with it -- I have them as well. But it does work for some, and if it does, then great. The point, or my point, is that there are ways to get in there to help rebuild. It doesn't all have to be about war and killing -- and I don't think you'll disagree with me on that particular point. As for the draft in the '70's -- I got so mad about it that I moved to Canada and tried to emmigrate. If I hadn't been to young to do so legally at the time, I might be there still.

Wouldn't it be positively nifty if solving problems --espcially the big ones -- were as simple as saying, "It should be thus"? Wouldn't it be terrific if the road to hell weren't paved with good intentions? The real world can be so damned uncooperative at times ... and complicated ...

So, now we all grow up a little bit more. Not in a bad sense, but rather, in the sense of taking on more personal responsiblity, and of seeing the world around us a little more clearly.

"Give me that old time rock and roll
The kind of music that soothes your soul ..."

I dance better to that than to reggae, m'dear, is all. I was born knowing how to jitterbug, apparently. Maybe my birth year had something to do with it -- having been born the same year as rock and roll, and all.

Although dancing the blues is fine with me, too. It could certainly work.

Just heard in the news that another planed terrorists attack could be prevented.. On a flight from Paris to America a man carried a little bomb (at least that's what I understood) in his shoes ,he lit a match but fortunately a stewardess saw him and nothing happened ... What a year!!!
