Thanks, Pat. That's probably it. On TV just now there was an ad for Bobby Vinton's version, so it must have been covered by several people. If it was written in '34 there are several generations of 'before my time,'too.
Gene Clark had a song about something 'Moon.' I found the sheet music for it in a bin at a music store in Quincy, IL. It was one of those days when I wasn't buying anything, so that's all I know about it. The only other blue moon off the top of my head would be the reference in Wesley Orbison and Craig Wiseman's 'The Only One.'

Everyone you know's been through it
You bite the bullet then you chew it
Tie the knot at the end of your rope
Buy a book to help you cope but
No consolation's going to come
You're the only one

Take a look through history
Recant some bits of poetry
You'll find the words still ring true
Some things don't change
Some things do

And you're the only one with a broken heart
The only one who's afraid of the dark
The only one in a crowded room
The only one who sees a blue moon

What you wouldn't give right now
To be another face in the crowd

And you're the only one who is all alone
The only one who's love is gone
The only one who has given in
The only one who will give again
And you're the only one with a broken heart
The only one who is falling apart
The only one in a crowded room
The only one who can see the blue moon

The only one who is falling apart
The only one who's afraid of the dark
The only one in a crowded room
The only one who sees the blue moon

In total agreement with aforementioned sentiments ... but as my mother said yesterday, "I hope they bomb the crap of that madman and his cronies ... but I hope they're still dropping food for the refugees too." News said 1 in 3 children are orphans.

Larry, I agree, but I don't care what they realize. It's going to happen, "praise Allah."

Pamram, your Mom is the Wizard and the Wisest. The children of Afghanistan and all the world should be our concern.

If the children of Afghanistan should be our concern, then we need to stop dropping them food they, #1 have a hard time reaching, as we tend to drop these care packages out where few people can reach them, in fields miles away from actual villages, #2 cannot digest properly. Afghanis eat rice and wheat, not peanut butter. Peanut butter will make them constipated, and no joke, that can be lethal to a people with little in the way of a water supply. Children are prone to that. #3 stop sending them leafets in English. WHY? They don't speak ENGLISH in AFGHANISTAN!!! And a lot of the smaller children think the leaflets are also food...#4 how would we feel if someone started bombing our country because of some whackjob and his buddies pissing people off and being in general a relgious, zealot asshole, and then they started dropping food relief and papers in some other language saying to be on their side, while simotaneously still bombing us???
Hey I'm not saying I condone the WTC attacks, or that bin Laden and the Taliban shouldn't be taken out, they totally should. But America is a bullying nation with horrible forein policies, and terrible arrogance. If we really cared about other peoples of this world, we would stop pretending that the world loves us to death. I feel bad for those kids too. Espcially since they will probably, if they live, grow up to hate us and become terrorists after we bombed their country and killed their parents. But hey, at least we gave them some PB...
Sorry, i had a lot of that in my system, had to get it out...

i think the children and the rest of the innocent people are going to be a lot better off thanks to our intervention. many of the supply routes are now opened up to start bringing in the masses of food that they need, and they won't have the taliban around anymore hoarding it for themselves! widowed mothers will have the opportunity to move around freely, work, etc. to get the help they need for themselves and their children. the big thing here is for us to not walk away this time. we, along with other countries, have to hang around and help this country find the stability that they've been lacking for so many years.

I'm with you there, Deb. Those food drops were an emergency measure, necessary because the Taliban had cut off all the food supplies to those people. It was never meant to be anything but a stopgap, and considering that it was meeting such a sudden and unforseen need for millions of emergency rations to reach people with special dietary requirements, they managed to put it together pretty damn fast.
With the Taliban forces gone, the regular supply routes (such as they are) can now be used to bring in more traditional foodstuffs and medical supplies by more traditinal means ... trucks, donkeys, etc. And now that woemn can go about freely and work once again, there will be a little more to go around.

Oh. But that's what Deb just said, isn't it? So I could have let it go with, "Yeah. What Deb said." Hmmmn. I'll have to try that sometime.

Meanwhile, my friend from India worries that overall, the terrorists have the upper hand, and that something has got to be done -- fast -- to change that. (He watched all the events of 9/11 unfold from his office window at the bottom of Manhattan.) I would have to agree with him.

Aside from anything affecting the rest of the world, we in the US may well be dealing with smallpox and/or ebola fever just in time for Christmas and New Years. The "Night of Power" is coming up. Let's hope that it doesn't work out so well for the terrorist groups this time.

Yeah, what muffy and deb said. I think that Rumsfield just recently announced that the food drops were ending now, because supply routes are now open. Afghanistan has a shot at being better off than they were under the Taliban and for the most part, I can't find much to argue about regarding the way the US has pursued this.

Muffy, that's very interesting and disturbing, what your friends in India have to say about things.

What you said, again and again and again. We need this time not to rush in, do the quick fix--OUR way--, and fugeddaboudit. That's what we always do, and it's a big part of why this is happening now. Of course I hope, fervently, that nothing else big does happen soon, but then if it doesn't happen, I'm worried that the GP will want to leave it all behind and will not pay enough attention and won't clamor for our gumment to follow through responsibly.

It does feel strange to be in general agreement with what our elected officials and military have done. I don't know how to act! (Though they're screwing up enough other things to keep me from feeling entirely like I've turned into someone else.)

My hometown is flying the flag at half mast, we will be welcoming home a native son who was one of the 3 men to be the first killed in action.

His funeral will be held Tuesday in the High School gym, and he will be buried with full honors.

And so it goes, our sons have marched off to war over and over since before this country began, sometimes the cause has been just, sometimes not so, but it seems as if fate has her own plans and she does not care for right or wrong, she sends death to each in their time.

Perhaps that is what decides the value of ones life, how one dies and why?

Beautifully said, Nathan.

Shannon, the newscast I saw showed the food packets to be a nutritious bean-rice stew. I didn't see the peanut butter thing. I agree that leaflets in English were useless. The main point is to NOT stop at least trying to help the innocent victims of the Taliban and this war they chose to start. What Deb, Muffy, Ceashel said better than I ever could.

As far as the pb and English leaflets go, if those are real, that's probably just added to show them it's really coming from us stoopid Americans.

Nathen, thank you for sharing what's happening in your town. What Pamram said--you expressed it so well. But also, it is strikingly different than in the 60s, when so many boxes came home, it was unremarkable. Prayers going out for the survivors.

I think the PB is true, but so are the beans. The packets had writing in English, not the leaflets, though. That's because the packets were part of stockpiles that we have for humanitarian aid that could wind up anywhere in the world. What was in the packets was the most generic, non-perishable stuff possible, with no meat products, so as not to violate any possible religious rules wherever they might go. We've been bashed in our own country for that since they started doing it. I can't understand that..no one said it was a perfect solution. Just that it might provide nourishment to some people who were cut off from normal routes. Anyway..that part is about over now.

Ceashel, I do relate about how weird it is to be in agreement with the military and our elected officials..and even some who were only sorta elected. It's also weird to see Rumsfeld on TV and not hate him. Thankfully we still have Ashcroft. It'll take more than a terrorist attack to make him palatable, so there's at least some sense of continuity there.
