the thought just occurred to me..while reading the next meeting date that i cant make as we will be on the road heading home...that those of us who cant make the sunday meeting, could meet at a different time and have a '2nd' discussion about the book....

we dont usually post the entire 'discussion' so much as a summary of the 'meeting'....and we usually honor rb with that...he has a gift for finding the highlighs of our discussion and phrasing everything eloquently.

Heh heh. Funny, that. And here I'd just been thinking that Sunday would be a perfectly good day for a matinee and brunch. (Although not quite in that order.) Anyway, I thought I'd try to talk my friend in Albany into doing this with me. Just goes to show ... something, no doubt. With any luck though, I'll have seen the movie once by day after tomorrow night, myself.
I've thought more movies than just 'A Clockwork Orange' needed to be seen twice since that came out -- but not very many, that's sure.
Well now. Guess I'd better find out whether I'm a born Beater, Seeker, goalie, or none of the above. I got the hang of being Beater easily enough. It's just like hockey, but on a broom. I was good at (field) hocky in high school. Never got the chance to try ice for hockey. Just for figure skating.

Someone wasn't awake at 6:30??? But anyway, Muffy and I, and Sue (altho Sue didn't bother to log on) DID have a disscussion on 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone'! One of 'our' favorite relics from chat stopped by. Louise, and she had read all 4 books, and had seen the movie with her Grandson...She gave a 2 thumbs up on both the books, and the movie...Then proceded to talk of Arlo, in Troy....So WE HAD to throw her out of Moose's and into blunderchat....

**It was a relitively wierd night!!! I thank Muffy, for not letting, the NON SHOWER UPPPER"S from going over the book...Muffy and I had differant recollections of the book. Me, having seen the movie, probly influened my memorie....WE pretty much, talked souly about the book....Muffy has read all 4....I didn't get past the 3rd...So it was limited, to the first book....We did, conjour some, scary details of second book. The part about the giant spiders, is hard to forget.....And I'm sure, it'll be in Movies, by the 4th of July.....

Ehem. Actually, someone was up at 6:30, but when that someone logged on, someone's computer crashed, and in waiting for it to boot up again, someone got sidetracked. So, after a shower, breakfast, tidying up around the house a bit, watching the morning news, and checking the mail, here I am,back to the computer again... Anyway, I said I'd <u>probably</u> wake at 6:00am rarin' to write, not that I was going to set the alarm and make it a point to post at that hour, or anything. <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/biggrin.gif" width=15 height=15>

It was pretty much as RB described -- although I would have described it a bit differently, of course. <u>That</u> due to something else we discussed while talking about the books, which is that our individual mind's eyes construct very different pictures. (Our imagined Hagrids, f'rinstance, were miles apart in looks.) But then, that's half the fun of talking about books and movies anyway, right? Seeing them through other people's eyes puts them into a different light, making them new all over again. Even allowing for the movie's influence on RB's perceptions, the difference in what stood out for each of us, and what parts we remembered best, make it seem like we are talking about entirely different works sometimes.

I rememeber a few things differently about the meeting, too: Louise arrived about and hour and a quarter into the meeting and didn't know it was a meeting -- but gamely said she'd read the first and third book, and that she's seen the movie. (I can't remember if she said she'd read the fourth or not, but I don't think so. I'm pretty sure she hadn't read the second, and didn't want anyone spoiling it for her by telling her too much about it.) But that's just how I remember it, and it's not a terribly important detail -- I don't think so, at least. Not for the purpose of this post, anyway. I mention it only as another example of those pesky little differences in perception. Of course, RB had help from Sue in the memory department, too. That helps.

It was very sweet of you to invite me, RB. Say 'Hi' to Sue for me. I hope she comes out for the next round. She's someone else I'm looking forward to meeting, virtually or otherwise.

The rest of you guys missed out. You shoulda' been there ...

The one other thing I'd say a bit differently is this: I don't see how J.K Rawling is going to get seven books out of Harry Potter, but I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say it's pointless for her to try. If she thinks she's got seven books in her that waiting to get out, then far be it from me to tell her otherwise. I'll be very surprised (albeit pleasantly so) if she can pull it off, and especially so if it turns out that she has another book in her that's as good as the first. (Put it this way: I'd hate to see it be like Anne Rice's series. Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys wouldn't be quite so terrible.)

I think I can say that RB and I certainly agreed the first book was far and away the best, and eminently readable as an adult. The remainder are still a better children's series than a lot of what's out there, but they do morph into just that: a series for children.

Oh yeah: and RB told Louise and me that we sounded dumb, at one point.

That was well captured Muffy. I'd say a detailed account. It was odd, now that I think of it. The meeting did last a good 2 hrs. give or take. With little else, but talk of the book...That says something...I'm sure, if it wasn't a good read, Muffy and I could have found something better to talk about!!!

*Her anology's on recollections, on reading, and the imagination, seem on target. NO TWO people remember alike....Similar, but not THE same...Which is what makes, it interesting. Sharing 'your' intake, compared to your comrad, and a spark ignites....I, like Muffy, love talking books!

Well, see, there we go again: if it was me, I'd have said my account was excruciating in its detail. RBrown, you saw Hagrid as a sort of Jolly Green Giant, didn't you? I saw him more as a sort of an 80's Harley biker club dude -- massive like a small house, but not green.
I got the feeling from the books that size and shape tend to be a little -- uh -- more fluid and malleable around Wizards, Magical Creatures, and the like.
Anyway, if it wasn't a good read, this thread wouldn't still be in Active Topics, now would it? And I'm not sure I want to be done talking about it yet, either.

I wonder if they're hiring ...?

Oh yeah ... and RBrown and I both forgot to mention that we talked about what book would be next. We agreed that Harry Potter is better covered as a unit rather than going through each book, especially since not everyone is going to want to read all of them --

So RBrown wants to go with Exley's "A Fan's Notes." That works for me, although I do want to finish the one I'm reading now, too -- Malika Oufkir's "Stolen Lives." I guess we just need to set a date, and make sure everyone has a copy ... ?

Sorry I missed the BBC meeting! (As you all know there's so much going on around Christmas)Has anyone read the book "Moon Palace " by Paul Auster? It's a very very good book....

howdy folks..thanks for the review(s) of the meeting...i'm sorry i couldnt make it..but we were somewhere in.....well..some state between ma and la!

there has been some interest in a second meeting for those of us who couldnt make the first....is the week between christmas and new year's too nuts to think about? should we wait until the new year?
