Somehow, if I were to lose the 300 million dollars that I'd made in three years (that's personal income, not company income) in the space of a few months, I'm almost positive I'd have an inkling about it. If he didn't know Enron was in trouble, uh ... well ...

Mrs. Lay's idea of being "broke", which she is now according to her, is living in a 7 million dollar condo, having properties in the Houston/Galveston area alone worth 10 million more (and that's not counting the various houses in Aspen and wherever else they have properties -- and you can bet they have "piéd a tèrres" in various cities that are bigger than most people's houses in the burbs); having about 30 million in liquid assets, and however many more million they still have in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc ... well, you get the general idea. That, to Mrs. Lay, is poverty struck. Tears-in-her-eyes, "What will we do now?" broke.

Down to just a few Mercedes and having to ski in Aspen instead of the Alps this year? A couple of million in the bank? Honey, she wouldn't be able to conceive of that kind of subsistence poverty. That's being worse off than an Afghani refugee in her mind. Seriously.

Contrary to what some so-called 'business executives' of certain so-called corporations would have us believe these days, the terms 'grand larceny' and 'capitalism' are not synonymous or interchangeable. Neither are the words 'theft' and 'profit'.
Also, "Doing business" is not universally understood as being no more than a euphemistic expression to describe activities which are, in fact, entirely criminal (by intent, in practice, and in results). To some of us at least, 'doing business' is still an open and unveiled reference to just that. The meanings of the words have not changed due to universal practice, and I doubt that most people are consentual participants to their perversion.

Capitalism and Socialistic Democracy/Social Democrat-ism/Democratic Socialism can co-exist just fine. They don't even contradict one another, necessarily -- let alone cancel each other out. One has to do with business and the other with politics, for starters. If anything, they complement and ennoble (or, at least, enrich) each other.
