agnes, well i'm glad efficiency is holding up in your part of the world. here i have this vision of many uncaring underpaid individuals rolling the "to be filed" book cart around, lolling down the isle grabbing any book sticking one here and then sticking one there. there is a very unpleasant lack of caring that permeates throughout this area. so, good to hear that's not the case everywhere.

i grew up in chicago, a melting pot of many ethnic groups and religions. so, i hope i'm not offending anyone by the following video's. i liked them and they remind me of many of the families i knew growing up.

and,

Christmas, a few years ago

i used to walk down state street with my mother as a very young child and look in the windows of the large department stores. it was a really big deal back then. the windows were covered until the premiere. a very competitive event. marshall fields and carsons were the largest stores and had the most elaborate displays, inside and out. this is just a little peek inside Christmas in chicago in the 50's.

but still, i really like this

and it is kind of funny, there is an albert einstein quote i recalled while listening to this clip, i have actually mentioned it around here not terribly long ago....and at the close of this talk, he quotes him as well! i was tickled. but that is just an aside

An excellent lecture. Throughout elementary school I was a library assistant. We are talking the Dewey Decimal System, lol. I was also a bookworm. It runs in the family, both my children love to read. I can't imagine not having a library at hand. And librarian's know EVERYTHING. In the rare event they don't know something they will work furiously until they do.

I still read fairy tales.

Thank you agnes.

P.S. although i was told otherwise, there is a library in my small community and i plan on visiting soon.

libraries still use the dewey decimal system me thinks. as a kid, my history with books as far as accessibility and variety went is kind of.....checkered? but anyhow! yes, i agree with you about librarians. i know i have asked them about stuff, (as recent as recently) and it seems they would become just as interested in finding out about it as i would be. and i really enjoyed the process.

agnes, if they are still using the dewey decimal system (in my town) they have NO idea how to use it. you are lucky to find a book alphabetically filed within the shelf you are looking at, never mind numerical . you also have to check, first names and every book beginning with "the". if you hit the jackpot and find the authors name you have a 50/50 chance of finding the book. In our society they are better off going with bar codes that can identify books out of place.

all i know is, them letters and numbers on the book's spine and such have made it easy for me to locate a book on the shelf, and to know exactly its place on the shelf (where on the shelf it belongs). however, i do recall seeing a sign on some shelves saying, "do not reshelve books", the staff preferring to do it, so as to avoid potential shelving mayhem.

all i was saying was, that i was pretty sure the filing system (around here) was pretty much the same as it ever was (the dewey decimal system, or if you don't mind my saying, "them numbers and letters" ) and that it always made sense to me.

i am still not sure if you are saying it is still used where you are or not.

will catch up on the clips in a bit!
