I'm thinking if I have it done during summer break, I'll only miss the first 2 weeks of school, when they usually don't need many subs anyway. So I'm probably going to lobby the doc to do it before my first month of healing is over... what terrifies me is having the tube down my throat when I wake up from anesthesia... and will have to have it in for about 6 hours after I wake up. Then having it removed! So I'm going to request a tracheotomy instead. I have to be able to deal with my neuroses and that's the best solution I can come up with (other than doing nothing)!

Hello Terrie, I have been thinking about your upcomming surgury as recently my father in-law had not only a double bypass but a valve replacment as well. I am not sure if it was morphene that they gave him after the surgury and while he was in ICU or what but the intention was not only to relieve the pain but to also help him not to remember what he was going through. He claims not to remember a thing and it seems that he doesn't. Not sure if you have talked to your doctor about the surgury or not but perhaps you should talk to your doctor about this and let him know what your concerns are. Just a thought.. but I understand how you feal about the surgury. Although I haven't had heart surgury I have had surgury to remove cancer and I understand your concerns. Letting my doctor know what I was worried about when waking up from the surgury made the experience a bit easier. Again, take care of yourself.

Terrie, I know you will get through this just fine. Talk to your doctor about all your apprehensions. S/he may be able to intubate you and remove the tube while you're still under the anesthesia, so you'd never even know, except for waking up with a sore throat.
