Oh. Silly me. What's the best type of lightbulb to use if you dream in color?

you ever try to push all the light out of your eyes in the dark..tou know...just hold your hands over your eyes and push a bit so you can settle down all those overactive rod and cone electrons creating crazy patterns in your brain and you can see the blind spot where the nerve comes through that is completely dark (now if God actually designed this thing called the eye, why didn't he put all the nerve endings behind the photodetectors, that doesn't sound very intelligent?). Sometimes I get colors out when I do that eye thing. Its amazing how pure drakness can deenergize those rods and cones so quickly (like being in a totally dark cave)..just seconds and all that secondary light stuff is gone.

Look, there he goes over the edge again pointing in different directions?

I've read and been told by science dudes and dudettes that people mostly actually dream in black and white(the way dubya thinks).Dreaming in color from my understanding is actually somewhat rare, and can be caused by such things as trauma and getting the wrong(or right) kind of mushrooms on your pizza. Of course a HAL 9000 computer dreams in 1200 DPI pixels." Dave, will I dream Dave..."

I dream in color...poll here...its been awhile since I had those funny mushrooms or cacti or anything similar...but I dream in color, sometimes quite vividly...its been awhile since the flying naked dreams (I miss those, its fun to fly naked, although I aint as thin as I used to be...maybe that is why I can't fly no more).

i definitely dream in color...never gave it a second thought...also quite vivid sometimes...sometimes things seem really shiny...sometimes there is music (like a backdrop)...sometimes crazy imagery...and sometimes a dream is so ordinary it is comical...i love it when i wake up and it takes a few moments to know where i am...that is when i know i slept good!

No matter how long I cover and push, I still see patterns and colors...

Edited to answer the poll:

I dream in color.

Most dreams we don't recall. I do recall reading some neurological thing that said the geometeric patterns we see in the dark and have in deep sleep dreams are the building blocks of all matter in the universe....the tip of the collective unconscious iceberg. I don't remember if I dream in color or b&w. I'll pay better attention tonight.

Color,(or colour as they say here) is how I dream, and how cool when you first shut your eyes at night sometimes and you see all those geometric patterns in bright colors as Kevin mentioned, wish I could get them all on canvas or film or something.

Well of course you dream in color in Oz! but, if you ever make it back to Kansas, you will dream in black and white. Didn't you see the movie?

Achromatopia, the inability of the brain to process color (apparantly it is common in Kansas possibly related to there inability to make cornbread stuffing at Thanksgiving (what are you doing with all that dried wonder bread?)), a malfunction reported as early as 1688. Imagine Jonathan, the Ney York abstract painter who developed Achromatopia after a car wreck caused concussion that resulted in short term loss of memory and reading ability but after 5 days all was normal except all his art was in shades of gray. He even commented on the loss of vivid color from his dreams. It led to all kind of emotional distress as he became a night person, because his perceptible tonal scale was more like “normal” then. (I read that in a book I found yesterday by Francis Crick called the Astonishing Hypothesis. Apparently, Francis spent much of his life thinking similar stupid things as I have been thinking. Who would of thunk? Looking forward to reading that one.

Anyway, I was thinking about that concept of order for free and life near the edge of chaos (Stuart Kauffman stuff). I read this book by him when I was over in the UK and he talked about buttons and strings? Dump a bag o buttons on the floor and take the string and play connect the dots. Think like magic a little energy transforms and the strings attach to the buttons as they touch. A simple rule, there can be only two attachments per button. It is a fairly simple argument that quickly creates order, a network. Pick up any given button and they all rise from the floor. Divide the buttons into four shades ( tones are relative). Suddenly there is the potential to store information within the sequence of buttons (how many different ways can you arrange four colors?). Then think of the buttons as a stringer of Christmas lights, you can imagine patches within the sequence of different colors or blinking or sequences of blinking and colors and the regulation can all be encoded in the sequence (from an engineering standpoint, fairly simple stuff). So think about how in a stringer of lights the removal of one light bulb (Larry) can turn off an entire patch or group of patches. Then you realize you can add a new patch of lights or remove a patch or change the sequence within a patch, all kind of stuff you can do to change the information and/or information interpretation that is stored in the sequence. Anyway, Stuart has modeled this with computers and using a few simple rules (Boolean Functions) he has demonstrated how nucleic acid and amino acid and even sugar based information systems could have evolved (the point being the emergence of order is not as mystifying as some would lead you to believe) and besides he gets to live in the mountains of northern New Mexico and travel around the world and bullshit about this stuff (cool job).

So when I wasn’t stumbling home from a pub or thinking about the history of MEN and FIRE (so primitive, but an easy tangent, I once heard a theory that fires played an important role in the social development of man and that a quantum leap in this development occurred with the invention of percussion and flutes or whistles, you can see I get easily sidetracked)..I was thinking of these Boolean things….but interestingly (or I thought so) when I came back home I read an article called Mutations, Black Holes and Antivirulence Genes (by Anthony Maurelli and Ann-Laure Prunier of the Institut Pastuer, ooohh, they get to live in Paris) in a little review rag that I occasionally peruse. The info was not really new but the sequence of data input into my brain was fortuitous. I was intrigued by the arguments on how Shigella species evolved from commensal Escherichia coli strains. Anyway, these E coli’s grabbed a chunk of DNA from its environment (probably a plasmid) that ended up in their chromosome that effectively turned off a chunk of DNA in the chromosome (happened to be antivirulence genes, hence the title). This now unused chunk of chromosome eventually degenerated giving the characteristics of the new Shigella species that distinguishes it from E. coli. Their theory is that this happened independently on at least four occasions (there are four species of Shigella) so that E. coli is the closest common ancestor to any one species of Shigella (this could end up in the rename game that is so common to microbiology). However, this agrees with Stuart’s stringer of lights and patches.

Of course I know what your thinking, this just causes all kind of brain echoes about vertical and horizontal evolution (well that is what happens in my brain) your probably thinking…what?....why?....well, it is all about F’God and pointing in different directions

well...my favorite part is about the quantum leap made in social development with the invention of flutes and whistles and drums and stuff :)

Hey we could get adg to perform an experiment for us (as I can't remember if I dream in color or black and white when I'm in the U.S.A.)
He can figure out what he dreams in, then when he gets here he can note if he dreams differently here or there. Color there, colour here or black and white here or etc etc. :? Maybe being in another hemisphere makes a difference?

Yeah Agnes, I agree, where would we be without flutes and drums and stuff.
