Later in the tour, at the Belladrum Festival, I was standing in the queue for money with a genial young chap and a very tall elderly fellow. I only realised gradually that I was shooting the breeze (“What? Your son likes death metal too?”) with Woody Guthrie’s son Arlo and grandson Abe, who is his dad’s keyboard player and manager. Abe’s death metal-loving son is Arlo’s occasional drummer. They had all been pursuing the Guthrie family connections in Scotland and I told them I had just been staying in Fife, where Johnny Cash’s people came from.

“There’s a Cash Farm,” I said, “and a Cash House.”

“Really?” said Abe, poker faced. “Is there a Cash Bank?”
