I grant you it feels different to be an observer than to be a target. And I grant you the verbage used to describe it differs. But Karl Marx was interpreting what was going on around him.

Being a serf is not a new invention of the rich and powerful.

John C Calhoun beat Marx to the punch by 30 years, he just saw it from a different point of view

Calhoun couched his defense of the institution of slavery in terms of (white male) Southerners' liberty and self-determination. And whereas other Southern politicians had excused slavery as a necessary evil, in a famous February 1837 speech on the Senate floor, Calhoun went further, asserting that slavery was a "positive good." He rooted this claim on two grounds—white supremacy and paternalism. All societies, Calhoun claimed, are ruled by an elite group which enjoys the fruits of the labor of a less-privileged group. But unlike in the North and Europe, in which the laboring classes were cast aside to die in poverty by the aristocracy when they became too old or sick to work, in the South slaves were cared for even when no longer useful:

I may say with truth, that in few countries so much is left to the share of the laborer, and so little exacted from him, or where there is more kind attention paid to him in sickness or infirmities of age. Compare his condition with the tenants of the poor houses in the more civilized portions of Europe—look at the sick, and the old and infirm slave, on one hand, in the midst of his family and friends, under the kind superintending care of his master and mistress, and compare it with the forlorn and wretched condition of the pauper in the poorhouse.

aint that somethin that those two little paragraphs lifted from the Wikopedia (that is a perty good pedia) suggest that both Marxism and Marxist Leninism are as American as Apple Pie

imagine that? huh!

argued on the Senate Floor by no less than the ex Vice President WOW!

Not to change the subject (again! he said with tongue in cheek) but were you referring to the price of concert tickets? It is, after all, a two way street. I can blast the artists for charging such outrageous prices for tickets, but I can also put much of the blame on the people who are stupid (or well to do) enough to pay those prices. I don't because I'm not...well to do, that is!

I don't recall who it was, but a journalist, back in the '70s, said that the counterculture's role models who sang about the nastiness of materialism and capitalism were also making oodles of money off of the very people they were singing (preaching) to. Well, that may not have applied to everyone. (There's an old joke: How do you make a million dollars in the music business? Invest three million! The biz is not noted for the rolling in of the dough.) But our generation produced enough "well-to-doers". The guy who wrote the article back then did have a point. And if you've noticed, it's the ones that made out the biggest who are now charging the most. They've learned "the art of more", as Todd Snider calls it.

One more joke: These three people are waiting to get into "The Hereafter" and the guy at the gate says,
"We're doing a survey. We'd like to know how much money you made in the last year of your life."

The first says, "I made about $735,000."
"Very good!" says the gatekeeper. "What'd you do?"
"Corporate attorney," came the reply.

The second steps forward and says, "I cleared $827,000."
"Whoa! Verrrry good! What'd you do?"
"Cosmetic surgeon in Beverly Hills."

The third person shyly steps up.
"Well, what'd you make in your final year?" the gatekeeper prods.
"Umm...well..with tips and gratuities...umm...maybe ten grand."
"Oh," says the gatekeeper. "What instrument did you play?"

Point is some people wait a lifetime to see a show, and then go and have your favorite artist so wasted they can't even play is a disappointment. Frankly, I have no problem with a little recreational contraband, but drugged out abuse is sad and pathetic.

Heck, I have a tape (which I didn't get untill tens of years later) of my first show which was over in England back in May 24, 1970. I don't have a lot of late 80s/early 90's tapes but I know some people who might.

Wanting to hear a bad night is a bit compulsive, I suppose.
