Arlo & 'Alice' get some air

Arlo Guthrie performed 'Alice's Restaurant' and other songs at the Hudson River Festival last night in lower Manhattan.
While there were no draft cards to burn, folk legend Arlo Guthrie fired up fans at a concert in lower Manhattan last night by playing "Alice's Restaurant," the seriocomic Vietnam-era tune marking its 40th anniversary.

The Coney Island-raised son of folk pioneer Woody Guthrie kicked off the Hudson River Festival with the 18-minute-long hit that he's only sporadically performed in the last decade.

"A lot of people think 'Alice's Restaurant' was an anti-war song. It's not. It's an anti-idiot song," Guthrie, 58, told the Daily News before going on stage. "So in these times of idiocy, I'm glad the song is still giving people something to smile about."

The crowd, which parks officials estimated at 4,500, sang along loudly as Guthrie and his band played standards like "City of New Orleans," "Coming Into Los Angeles" and "When a Soldier Makes It Home."

"I love Arlo Guthrie so much I named my son Arlo," said Fran Miller, 55, of Battery Park City, who attended the free concert with her son, Arlo Hanley, 32.

The crowd was dominated by aging hippies, some who saw Guthrie play at Woodstock in 1969. But there was a strong contingent of fans who weren't even born when Guthrie released "Alice's Restaurant," the story of how an arrest for littering helped him avoid getting sent off to Vietnam.

"We don't want Iraq, like they didn't want Vietnam," said Andy Charlton, 17, a student at Bronx Science High School.

Nick Wright, 15, of Manhattan said he was raised on Guthrie's songs. "I learned to play guitar off Arlo and Woody Guthrie songs," he said. "No matter what the era, a good song is always relevant."

Hey, I got a bound volume of the PRIME TIMES. New Mexico arts and entertainment newspapers from 78 and 79. There is an arol interview and some photos from his November 15 1978 show at Popejoy Hall. Also has a concert announcement with the AMIGO pic of Arlo giving a thumbs up.

Ill be reading through them today. Anything that happened in entertainment/music in 78-79 are in here. I was 8 years old (sorry) and now I can find out about the groups I have liked for years.

By the way, in February 2006, Arlo will be performing at the Germantown Center for the Performing Arts, Germantown, Tennessee. That community adjoins Memphis, Tennessee. Hope that a lot of forum members will attend.

Glad to be making friends with forum members -- contacted two others from Memphis!

The July 2005 issue of Relix Magazine has a review of the recent Guthrie/Bromberg Delaware show.

I think I saw that issue but had no idea Arlo was in it...

I think I have mentioned before that I have 30 years worth of Yankee magazine sitting on a shelf in my study, thanks to my Dad who is a subscriber. Well, I have been visiting them on-line as well for awhile and a few months back reminded them that it is Arlo and Alice's 40th anniversary this August. I always look forward each month to finding the new edition of Yankee when I visit Mom and Dad (of course I have to wait 'til they're done with it 'til I can take it home and really soak it up!)

So this afternoon (it's Sunday here) I finally had some spare time to veg out on the couch and read it. I had already skimmed through with baited breath hoping to see an Arlo article but to no avail! I had read a few articles, then as I turned to the On The Web page I dozed off (as you do when reading on a Sunday afternoon!) As I slowly awoke from my reverie through sleepy, out of focus eyes (my glasses had fallen off) I thought I saw the words 'And Don't Miss.......Yankee Classic: An August 1986 interview with Arlo Guthrie'. Well I thought I must be still asleep and dreaming about what I had hoped to see, but realized I was in fact awake and grabbed my glasses to find that yes those words were there on the page! Well I got on-line and read the article, just to make sure, and there
it was, but without photos.

I couldn't believe that I could have forgotten reading it in '86, but then remembered I had been involved in a serious car accident at Easter '86 and the rest of that year had kinda been a blur. So faster than a rat up a drainpipe, I was soon climbing up on my desk and reaching to the stacks of Yankees piled high! Of course they've been moved a few times to several abodes, and had gotten a bit out of order, but after getting some dust in my eyes and getting down off the desk without doing myself an injury I had the '86 edition in my hot little hand!!!

Well the article is a heck of alot longer than the version on the web page and with some neat photos, so if you have never seen it and can get your hands on a copy you're sure to enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The late singer-songwriter John Hartford will also be honored with the Americana Music Association's President's Award during the Sept. 9 event at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. The Spirit of Americana Award, presented by the association and the First Amendment Center, calls attention to those who have been vocal in promoting social and political causes. Past recipients include Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Steve Earle. The awards show will feature appearances by actor Billy Bob Thornton, Emmylou Harris, R&B great Solomon Burke and many others. Arlo Guthrie will lead all of the performers in singing Hartford's classic, "Gentle on My Mind."

I just put Rolling Stone on my palm pilot and was pleasantly suprised by a wonderful review of Alice's Restaurant 30th Anniversary CD.
