When my sister Ellen and I were kids, we had neighborhood sister/friends Diane and Karen. Karen now lives in Phoenix and is flying back on Thursday. Seems their mom, Verna, has bone cancer, kidney failure and had to be resuscitated in the hospital last night. She might also have some lung problems from decades of smoking (she quit around 15-20 years ago).

Please pray that Karen makes it "home" in time and for some kind of treatment or easy passing for Verna.

Verna's been moved to ICU and is "out of it" according to my sister Ellen. She's being drugged because of intense pain. They now believe it's NOT bone cancer but rather malignant myeloma http://www1.excite.com/home/health/cancer_overview/0,16398,Myeloma_Introduction,00.html . Karen (her younger daughter) came in from Phoenix today. Ellen and I will be at the hospital on Friday (we're going down to help Marian [dad's gf] with some things around the house)... so it'll be a reunion of sorts <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/frown.gif" width=15 height=15>

I should add that Verna was instrumental in many happy days in our family. She was always the behind-the-scenes person in charge of decorating, letting in the caterers, had a spare key to the house, helped me with surprise parties for my parents, and lastly... she did all the behind-the-scenes work (with another neighbor Leslie) at my Dad's while we were at his funeral. Verna stayed late helping clean up afterward and was the last to leave the house.

I spent a few hours with her just a few days before Dad died. I went to her house and we sat in her kitchen just like old times. I felt like I was "home."

It's now down to a matter of "hours or a day or so" according to her husband, Larry. I just spoke with him about 1/2 hour ago. Ellen and I are going to the hospital shortly. Verna wanted to go home with hospice and that was arranged yesterday for tomorrow, but now it seems as if that won't happen.

Watching a loved one pass from this world can be hard. We learn how to aquire things in life, but not how to lose them. Lost my wife to cancer Jan. 31, 2004. A quote from a book by one of her best friends. "Forget the words. There are no words. This pain needs a hug. A sincere, kind, loving hug. Forget the words and remember to hug." More prayers said, and many more hugs sent "And out of the cocoon emerges a butterfly"

Verna died tonight around 8:30. She'd said her goodbyes to her family this morning, died under a morphine drip... in her sleep.

Good night, Verna...
