What makes Cindy Sheehan so special is that she resists the easy path - which would be to embrace the lie that there is something noble about our attack of and presence in Iraq. It's always comforting to be able to justify the loss of a loved one - so most parents in her situation become hawks on Iraq - ignoring all facts.

President Bush yesterday:

"Each of these men and women left grieving families and loved ones back home. Each of these heroes left a legacy that will allow generations of their fellow Americans to enjoy the blessings of liberty. And each of these Americans have brought the hope of freedom to millions who have not known it."

"We owe them something. We will finish the task that they gave their lives for ... by staying on the offensive against the terrorists, and building strong allies in Afghanistan and Iraq that will help us win and fight - fight and win the war on terror."

Note Bush linking Iraq and Afghanistan. We're building strong allies in those countries? Makes one wonder where he gets his information.

I love that GerryB post, I have read it 4 times and still it amazes and startles!

My particular favorite is when somebody mentions exit strategy. Let's see. Send in a load troops with the most modern killing equipment on this planet. Kill and destroy in as civilized a manner as possible (there are the unfortunate innocents of war). Incite fear, hatred, and ancient feudal rifts within and generally hatred toward everything external among the "indigenous population" in the "disputed area". Destroy all systems and have "private interests" make a fortune in an attempt to rebuild while the insurgents "destroy what is left". And then exit per a predetermined plan with dignity.

Is this correct?

The Crawford "Bring Them Home Now" Bus Tour made a stop in Albany today. I wasn't able to attend the noontime rally, but I understand it was well attended by about 300-400 people. Camp David Fischer was set up, in honor of a local soldier who was killed in Iraq. There was a counter-rally at noontime as well.

I did get to the evening events. We gathered at Camp David Fischer for a short speech and the reading of the names of 88 service people from New York State who have died in Iraq. At that point there were about a hundred or so of us. We then held a silent march around the Capitol Building, proceeding to an auditorium for some more talks. Many people apparently opted to go straight to the auditorium, as there were probably about 300 or so there.

After a brief speech or two, and a video of the events in Crawford, seven representatives of the Bring Them Home Tour took the stage. They represented a wide spectrum of people directly affected by the war. There was the wife of a soldier, she being a lifelong pacifist, and her husband a member of the National Guard, who told of her husband calling her, after an incident where his platoon accidentally killed several Iraqi children... there was a VietNam Veteran (VVAW member) who told of the flashbacks he suffers, and how he sees young people coming back from Iraq who will undoubtedly have similar problems. There was the father of a young man who was killed in Iraq. There was the wife of another Guard member, whose husband is called to go to Iraq in November. And there were two young men, one of whom was a founding member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Their stories were truly moving... many tears shed... but the main message they were sending was... IT IS UP TO US TO STOP THIS!

They are encouraging us to do everything we can to stop the war. Keep calling our representatives. Vote against those who do not listen and act on our behalf. Keep talking to family, friends, co-workers, and make sure that the young people in your circle KNOW their options. Participate in the DC Rally on Sept 24, or in a local rally if you can't be there. Consider non-violent action ... there is much talk of a 'sit-in' among people in DC... go to DC and sit down, and don't go home... disrupt the "business as usual" in DC.

I keep thinking of this sort of silly sentence made of two-letter words: "If it is to be, it is up to me."

About our political representatives, we heard that Rep. Michael McNulty (D-NY), today, signed onto the House bill requiring all troops to be sent home beginning not later than October of next year, and he indicates that he will do everything he can to try to bring them home now. The Bring Them Home representatives spoke with McNulty for an extended time on the phone, and are encouraged by his turnaround. They tried to speak with others, Clinton and Schumer in particular, but only got to talk to their Aides. It does NOT look good. Hillary is more hawkish than you might realize...she is endorsing a plan to put 80,000 MORE troops in Iraq.

Sigh... there is so much to do... I'll do what I am able...

We'd have been better off with Hitler ruling the world than not forcing our form of government on Iraq???!!!

But often it seems like nobody is paying attention to what our country is actually saying and doing in the world. Anything Cindy Sheehan does that gets more people to listen ranks her as an American hero.

Sooner or later some so-called red state conservatives are going to start saying, "Hey! I was in WWII. These guys are nuts." Or, "Bush says he's against higher oil prices - are we nuts?" Or "How come Haliburton gets all the biggest government contracts?" Or (this is a bring your own quote forum)!"

Cindy Sheehan and our own Wyldflower have done more for world peace than all the members of the Bush administration put together. They remind us by example of things like the Golden Rule and that "two wrongs don't make a right."

I don't know how many of you saw Cindy Shehans "commercial" or limited time spot... whatever you'd call it. But it absolutely took my breath away!! The honesty was so wonderful. She said - what I would have loved to say to that money driven, lying, murdering _ _ _.
