Hi all,

I'm in Scotland, and all we get in the media over here is Bush's line on attacking Iraq. There is a very large anti-war contingent growing here, and Blair varies between the UN route and following Bush. We get little coverage of the attitudes of American citizens. What do Americans actually think about the (imminent) war on Iraq?

Hi Steve!
I know I n not the right person to answer your question since I m from Germany (but I live in Spain) ... I know that many people think that because of what our old /new chancellor Schroeder said that ALL Germans are anti-americans or at least, have a do-not -invade-Iraq attitude...
Well I don t know what to think of "it" either and it would be great to hear some Americans.. (what do you think of Bush s plan ???- I read that mot American are in favour of Buh plan....)
Greetings from Spain, and hope to see some of u in chat soon,
karolina (fan)

Personally, I think Bush is a dolt and I still can't understand how he got into office in the first place.
I do believe that there are more people against the idea of going to war than are for it, unfortunately, the media tends to care more about their money and how their ratings are than about actually getting the story straight, and right now, war sells - or at least the idea of it.

How he got into office is, he was appointed by the Supreme Court. BTW, and incidentally, and if anyone cares, that is NOT the usual nor the legal way to take that office in the U.S.

Few of us around these boards are what you might call "typical," but the people I work with--in Bush's erstwhile state of residence (Texas)--are more typical, and they seem to be doubtful about this call to war. It's a strange experience to be in agreement with them.

George Bush is not interested in serving anyone who did not vote for him, since most Americans did not vote for him, I gyess that leaves George Bush looking after his own interests and pet projects.

Hoping that PEACE breaks out in the middle east.....Oh yes, hello from the USA

I don't really know what the latest polls show, but it seems to me that everyone I've heard discuss it is somewhere between very much against it and pretty skeptical about the idea. I don't know anyone who's gung-ho in favor, although I do know lots of people who are truly concerned about Iraq in a number of ways.
Mostly, though, I don't see a lot of passion on the subject at all, maybe just as a result of confusion about what the right thing to do would be. Dunno.

I think Bush and Rummy are alarmingly close to starting WW-3. I think if you shaved Bush's head, you'd find the three 6's. But I also think that religious fascists must be dealt with, and this particular brand of fundies seems only to understand the sword. With Bush, they're found the one guy who may be willing to give it to them.

What can you say? It's madness. Human beings elevate themselves above the natural world. That arrogance will be their end.

most people i talk to are not sure war with iraq is the right way to go, but they are very nervous about iraq. they're also nervous that war with iraq will create many more people that hate us. sept. 11th made a lot of people sit up and take notice about the middle east, and now that they have they're not sure how to approach it. i would say "confused about how they feel" is about the right description for a lot of americans, at least by my conversations with people.

a lot of people don't buy bush's line completely, as they're sure he has other agendas which are not totally related to the issues of security. there is the issue of baby bush trying to finish up what papa bush didn't. baby bush has a lot of the same people around him as papa bush did that are advising him...and many of them were not happy when papa bush didn't go take out saddam the first time we were there...so they see this as a second chance.

then you have karl rove who sees it all as an election issue, and he's ready to use it...people living or dying is not his concern...just getting people elected. as in, if you get people scared and then tell them only bush and his friends can save them and that gets them elected...well, then he's done his job. politics in america...

Hi Stevie:
Does the tale of "The Emporers New Clothes"
have meaning, in Scotland?..thats what's happening, with Bush's War Against Terrorism, in general, and War on Iraq, specifically...despite all the propaganfa, sabre rattling, Cabinet member rantings, et al. Bush ain't wearin' nuttin, and, the Anti-War movement, here, is about to grow, exponentially.
Please help be our conscience, on this one, out Leaders here, have none...
Dave/Bumper

Hello, World!

I read an interesting article in the newspaper today that hints at the fact that since we haven't been able to find Osama, Saddam has been invited as a stand-in target for whatever reason, unfinished business from Bush Sr., a diversion away from the economy, an election issue or whatever they are thinking. I am concerned that Iraq may have dangerous weapons, but other than the fact that they have them and they don't want the UN to look at them, is there any reason to suspect they are getting ready to use them? Why provoke that?

I don't know anyone other than those connected with the pres, who are jumping on the war with Iraq bandwagon. Most people I talk to are against it.

I have one son who was formerly in the US Navy, one in the Air Force Reserves, and one about to enlist in the USMC--I really don't want ANY of them fighting in Iraq.

Hi to all of you!
I m glad to hear so much response from Americans to Stevies question...
And I m also glad to hear that so many (or nearly all of u ) seem to be against going to war with the Iraq..
It s a very difficult question, because the American intervention in international conflicts has often been VERY helpful (second world war, helping west Berlin when the Soviets didn t let anything in, just to name a few...)
But on the other hand there is Vietnam, and the support of totalitarian regimes during the cold war...it s a very difficult question indeed..
I hope that there still is a chance that there will be peace on earth,,,
hoping for the best
fan

There is a BIG difference between Americans coming in, invited, to help in a conflict, and Americans taking the "Big Brother" role and going in, whether wanted or not.

I don't see any reason to be going into Iraq now... even if the Iraqis have the implements of war that is being claimed, what right do we have to go in, and commence warring with this country? The people - the ordinary people - of the invaded country will be the ones who suffer most. Do we want to be responsible for this suffering?

Remember the saying that was popular during the Viet Nam conflict: "War is not healthy for children and other living things."

We can be certain that Iraq has chemical and biological weapons as the United States inder George Bush Sr, supplied them with the weapons, Iraq was our good buddy until we did'nt need him any more and now he is EVIL. Oh Yes, I am buying into this lie, that WE are GOOD and they are EVIL, maybe we should try and learn to live in peace and supply only weapons of Peace in the future. (Weapons of Peace? Food Medicine clean water hope for the future)

Unfortunately, it seems that the "kick their ass and steal their gas" mentality is still in the majority right now. Every day that goes by, however, makes it more and more difficult for the Bush pushers to prevail. I say that Saddam is a regional hoodlum who is playing with the West and the UN in order to stay in power; he is not stupid enough to be an imminent danger to the US or Great Britain. On the other hand, Bush is playing with Saddam to keep everyone's mind off the economy and the stock market. I believe his plan is to attack when the Dow hits 6750.

Even the generals will tell you that the first casualty of war is truth. Sadly, as much as I think Saddam is full of shit, I think in large measure, our government is too.
That lesson may be the most positive thing to come from the Vietnam war.
I hope and pray that any action that may be taken is proven justified. My fear is that there are many with clever tounges that can justify a position, without really justifying
an action.
