I was in the audience when that was recorded. I put it here because of the irony of it all of course. I mean Merle had not met a hippie chick yet at that time and Okie From Muskogee was still an anthem in the world of rednecks and right wingers. A Grateful Dead audience in OKC at that time was well, lets say generally less than congenial to the view of life typified by Merle in those days. I guess it is ironic?

re: okie from muskogee, i can definitely see how time and place would matter when it comes to that song.
having heard the entire song (and that being the original from merle haggard) only JUST recently and THEN finding a grateful dead cover of it was kind of funny in an ironic kind of way (speaking of ironic),
along with then finding the responses i guess you would call them, hippie from olema (a new one to me) and asshole from el paso (which i'd heard of). growing pains reflected in a sort of musical time capsule of sorts i suppose?

well i was thinking when i read the words "the great misinterpretation"
i was wondering...what is "the great misinterpretation"?....and a humorous voice in my head says, "that might mean, the internet?" i dont know....

but then i read on and i sense a sort of melancholy.......or something, and i don't want to laugh. and i see the words true love....then of course from there the age old question,,,,what is true love? perhaps it is easier to sense than to define?
