I needed something to look forward to with my work schedule the way it was last week so I blundered over the the Church for the first time last night. (Stoping at the light in Claverack three times on the way to the Church counts as blundering, right?) I figured there would be someone around on hootenanny night and sure enough there was. George kept apologizing for how small the room is but since I live in a house with seven foot ceilings and the big room is fourteen foot by fourteen foot it seemed like a palace to me. It was the first time I wasn't sitting in the back of the band or choir or whatever so naturally my brain turned to mush during my first appearance as a solo. Very supportive people. Now I know to have stuff written down. There were prizes! Nap was awarded a packet of 1 Ton Tomato seed for his mispronunciation of Guantanamera! Eric played the most amazing fiddle. It was worth not getting sleep!

I wish I lived closer and didn't have a HECTIC schedule with 2 kids ALWAYS having to be somewhere 3 hours ago! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15> !!! I'd LOVE to attend a HOOT! sometime!! Sounds like fun!! I just got an ocarina that I could play -- hmm... guess I better learn how, first!!

The best time to practice for a hoot is when you are trying to get the kids to go to sleep. You get to practice singing and playing and the kids settle down and go to sleep to avoid having to listen! <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/zzz.gif" width=20 height=24>

Those hoots sound like fun. Wish they had something like that around here. A yr or so ago I played dulcimer & autoharp & Canjo (can banjo) in church in a music thing they ahd. Different folks did differenet songs either singing or playing music. I was nervous & esp when my finger picks flew off my fingers while playing autoharp, leaving me with only one pick lol. I didn't stop to pick them up tho. I just continued playing as if nothing had happened all the while freaking out lol. Those things are projectiles lol...

I was more nervous getting ready and driving up the second time than the first. That was surprising to me. I just managed to have cheat sheets typed up and was only a little late for the signup. There was one typo that I didn't find till I played the wrong chord but I managed to correct for the rest of that song. Less stummbling and I kept going and in time pretty good. Folks were joining in for the chorus of The John B's Sail so I must have been doing something close. There was a young gentleman still in high school who is writing some excellent songs and has spectacular technique on guitar who was there last night. I should bring that old copy of Rise Up Singing so when I find out who the "homework assignment" is (it was Phil Ochs last night) I can see if I can fake something.

Our church is having the annual Valentines Banquet Sat nite & Mike & I are in it with him playing Johnny Cash & Glen Campbell the country singers & I get to be June Carter lipsynching with Mike as Johnny Cash. The theme is country
music & country stuff lol. I am so nervous. We'll see if the show gets postponed lol as they are predicting snow around here...

I wonder if the snow is going to amount to anything tonight...

I guess I had too much fun last night. Sleep deprivation is not what it's cracked up to be. I debuted the Harmony banjo last night. For thirty years I used C, F, and G exclusively on the banjo but getting nervy from the guitar experience, slipped in D, A, and E about a month ago. Freight Train was okish, but Waltzing with Bears and Country Roads worked well.

Eric debuted a new National resonator guitar. What a dynamic range he has with tha instrument!

A duo calling themselves Radio Free Earth (website and everything) did a classic blues, a moving lament Tears for New Orleans, and a danceable duet.

George said to round up more people. You know you don't have something better to do on Thursday nights than the Hootenany at the Guthrie Center! C'mon out!

No problem. When me and the mrs. got there, George was watching a DVD of the Saturday Tipitina show (of the Ridin' on the City of New Orleans tour). There was talk of a documentary. Too bad Ramblin' Jack's set was short on Saturday due to flash photography. It was quality video and the sound was good.

I guess everyone was resting up for St. Patrick's Day. We were the second car when we got there around seven and Tom arrived about seven thirty. Allen wandered in just before eight. There was a neighbor couple who came to see what was going on and find out about volunteering for the Troubador series. They left after me and Tom did our sets.
