Many years ago, I was given this adorable little blacker than soot cocker spaniel puppy. He was more precious than precious. I named him Arlo. Not just any ole Arlo either. He was named Arlo Guthrie. He was sweet, he was cute, and the hair on his ears had the exact same wave as 2-legged Arlo.

Situations changed and Arlo went to live with my mom. Mom often asked me why I hadn't named him Joe. He is a COCKER spaniel after all. But every time I told her the same thing. "Mom, He's an Arlo." Arlo is now 13. He has a touch of cataracts and he has to go pee at 4am but he's healthy. He's still a sweet dog and he's still loving. My mom only has one complaint. He won't stay out of the trash!!!!! Go figure

Miranda, Thats a great story! I used to have a Calico Cat named Woodrow Wilson Guthrie Kitty, since that was such a big handle for such a lil kitty, of course we just called her Woody! Oh what a fine lil kitty she was! She's now gone on to be with her true namesake!

My mom says it's the name... After years of complaining that he should have been named Joe, She was gifted with a dog named Joe. He's black too. Words have power!!

Great story Miranda.My two dogs are nearly 17 (Ruby, a red Kelpie Red Cattledog x) and 14 (Cimmaron, a Blue Cattle Dog with a touch of Malamut, a big cuddly bear). They have a touch of the arthritis and Ruby is deaf as a post. Lately we call them Staggers and Limpy but they still come with me anywhere I go when working outside on our 6 acres. Boy I'll miss 'em when they go.


Hey ruthie, your post about your Calico cat reminded me of something, and I thought that since most of the Group W Benchers are around my age someone might be able to help me.

When I was a kid in Oregon I had a book which I loved called "The Calico Colt". It was one of my favourites 'cos I've always had horses and been horse mad all my life.
Well, when we moved to Brisbane we brought most everything with us but I guess my parents decided we couldn't take all our books so that one must of got given away by mistake. I've never seen it here or found it anywhere when I've been back in the states. So if anyone has or had this book I'd appreciate it if you could tell me who wrote it or published it. It was an illustrated book. I've Googled it but no luck.Thanks for reading....Louise.
