it was just the other day i discovered that song, and i really liked
finding it....it so beautifully (in my opinion) spoke about social issues revolving around gender, and their impact. (not to mention i was such a tomboy growing up....some of the stunts i would pull....but maybe those stories for another day) and i remember one day i was hula hooping, i was about seven i guess, and this kid walks right straight up to me, looks me up and down and asks, "are you a boy or a girl?" and i answered right honestly, "i'm a girl." anyway, while most of the song is from a girls perspective, it doesn't neglect to recognize that boys have feelings too! so incomplete are my comments of the song. i think the song itself is beautiful.

To your earlier point...sometimes kids have little to no filter. Sometimes its cute. I hope the persons comment was not too painful for you. Some people never have empathy. Woody's lyrics give perspective to ones empathy...

"Maybe if I hadn't a seen so much hard feelings
I might not could've felt other peoples"

harvested some dandelion greens (and a small bowl of violets) between cloud bursts and put 'em in a salad!

have some if you feel like...

if not, feel free to partake from a plate of atmosphere at the bar

i wanted to revisit this post. again, i do believe that ("the person's
comment") to have been a "no filter" moment, and again, i don't
remember being overly concerned about the comment.
but i wanted to talk a bit about this empathy thing...

(perhaps i should start by first
saying that i did not take this personally, nor am i upset....i am just
trying to express some thoughts, which have pretty much gone all over
the place again)

empathy is a big word.
a person can empathize with a lot of things ("positive" emotion or
"negative" emotion)....sometimes resulting in compassion, or anger, or
fear, etc....empathy can exist with all of those situations.

or maybe a person can empathize with another's pain (discomfort?), or
sympathize, but not be able to empathize with a particular situation
and/or a resulting manifestation. and how does one proceed?

woody, (speaking of woody), seemed like a tortured soul!

pretty much people want to be happy....but people are complex
creatures....and sometimes it is hard to be understood (that is
something i think i can empathize with!)

sorry i am struggling with this a bit in trying to articulate?

i am curious to hear some other thoughts, (i hope i haven't scared DRR
off!) but i know that it gets dang quiet around here.

I think people develop perceptions and then develop filters
the perceptions are derived from both personal observations and then the feedback or commentary on those observations
the filters are derived for selfish reasons

You didn't conform to his perception at the time
you had a mixture of attributes that didn't allow his appropriate categorization
in my opinion it is because the logic he had developed was inaccurate
he needed to reevaluate the sets of attributes that he applied to his logic and adjust them

I mean, why is it that you should conform to his perceptions
I have spent my life failing to conform and I am quite proud of it!

As far as empathy, my empathy would be with him
I believe by that time in life he could have been a little less judgmental
(I mean that from the view that you didn't conform to his perceptions and instead of confronting himself, he confronted you)
However, it is tough being 7 sometimes and if I recall
I still had plenty to learn and as I grow older
I find I still have a way to go!
