hmmm- mom's 89 Buick century limited- Maroon-
I accidentally made the engine explode twice-

once from being in the wrong gear and making this, the wrong kind of car, climb an uber steep incline so I could go hiking.

the second time, it was the friggin thermostat- it was warped and wasn't letting steam out and voila!
Dead car
poor penelope- may she rest in peace

Inspections aren't all bad...I don't know whether Ohio has inspections now, but at least at one time they didn't. You shoulda seen some of the piles of junk I saw when driving thru there! The drivers were taking their lives into their own hands! I saw one car that was so rusted, it was literally flaking away as it flew down the turnpike....I was hoping the driver reached his destination while he still had a car left!

November 8th RS magizine has article on the star's first automobiles....Worth the read. Probly find it at rollingstone.com if not at newstands....All your favorite musicians, like Ludicris, John Mellencamp, Joan Jett, Don Henley, ect, ect.

My favorite story is by Willie Nelson

"First car I owned was a 37 Ford. I was about seventeen. I remember me and Zeke, an old buddy of mine, we're going to a party. We went to this girl's house to pick her up, and I left Zeke in the car. We'd just filled it up with gas. And there were little kids playin around in the driveway, and one of em asked Zeke, "What would happen if I was to strike a match to that gastank?" And Zeke said, "Well the godamn car would blow up!" So, next thing you know, Zeke comes runnin' in the house - "The car's on fire!" One of them kids just struck a match to the gas leaking out of the tank. Our 37' Ford was burning to the ground. We just went off somewhere and got drunk. Let it burn. Wasn't nothing you could do about it.

**Hi Muffy, nice to see you around....Image

This is the 2nd time that Rolling Stone has stolen an idea from a thread I started, the other being their discussion of the worst Dylan songs. I'm starting to get paranoid....

I wish my posts were copyrighted.....The only patent I own is on procrastination, which I invented. Every time somebody puts something off, I get a five-cent royalty.

sorry to tell you this joe, but you only own the patent on the word... i've been collecting .20 cents per use of
"filling the void"
and
"avoidance behavior"
and
"I'll get to it soon"

unfortunately, as I'm sure you're aware, the payment is in the mail...

First car: My mom's 1963 VW bug, seafoam green, handed down to me. Sold before I knew how to work on them, when the engine went bust. Second car, 1968 VW bug, white, bought in 1972. Name (original) Buggy. Still have her. Have rebuilt her twice. She's the best weekend car! Better than any "performance" machine; she has soul.

corollas and coronas were great little cars. my brother and i drove to alaska in one once.

got another car. thought i'd mention it, even if it isn't my first: an '86 nissan wagon with 176,000 miles on it. it should be good for another 100,000 if i'm lucky -- and if i don't hit any more deer. it looked ok for a couple of weeks, the car did, until a deer decided to commit suicide on my fender. didn't even see the darn thing until it went caroming off said fender, and i'm really careful and watchful when it comes to deer, too. thought i was immune, that only the careless and speedy nailed deer. wrong again. no way i could have avoided it. it bounded into the side of the car. lucky to still be alive (cheating the grim reaper yet again) but feel like a murderer all the same. deer are so close to being human, sizewise and weightwise. at least, that's how it felt at the time. thank goodness i don't know from experience what it feels like to hit a human.

My "first" car was a 1965 Chevy station wagon, blue, named Alvin (chipmunks, it was contrary) <img src="http://www.arlo.net/ubb/smilies/smile.gif" width=15 height=15> It as from my father's business, used as a family car. I took it everywhere. Then he decided to get me my own car, a neighbor's 62 Rambler. I begged him not to, but he warned me, if I don't take the Rambler, he'll take away the wagon!

So, I got the Rambler, it never ran, and he eventually signed a loan for me to buy my other "first" car, a 1970 Ford Torino. Red with a black vinyl roof, 2-dr. I put 190,000 miles on it in just over 6 years, rebuilt the engine twice, trans once. It finally needed valves and I broke my ankle, couldn't do the work, wasn't worth it to pay someone to do it for me, so I actually traded it in!

Many years later, I finally got my "dream car" a 1978 Ford LTD wagon, my "yacht". It was beige. HUGE! I rebuilt that car with evry ounce of love I had. Took my kids everywhere in that car. I had heavy-duty shocks, rebuilt the upper end of the engine, then 6 months later, the lower end. I remember nursing my baby daughter, holding her in one arm and working on the engine with the other, toothpicks and tweezers to clean out the inches of sludge in the engine.

The car got hit and the state law stated that I could sell it but I couldn't keep it. What a loss that was for me. I still cry for it 10-1/2 years later. I replaced it with a 1984 burgundy Mercury Colony Park. An absolutely gorgeous car, but not my color. I resented having to replace my beloved LTD. I've now had the Mercury for 10-1/2 years and just this week got a car to relieve my Mercury of all the city driving I do. It now has around 150,000 miles on it, the doors don't lock, windows don't work, heat can't be shut off, and it starts without a key! It's getting around 8 miles to the gallon and bucks and stalls in summer; I'm scared to drive it in snow. Other than that... it's been the MOST reliable car I've ever had! Usually costs me about the price of 2 light bulbs every state inspection!

But now that Ford is making cars like their Taurus, I won't buy another Ford. I spent over $3,000 in 4 years of owning a Taurus and won't take that risk again. Everything in a Tuarus is very expensive! And they break down all the time. Yep, FixOrReplaceDaily!

I just bought an 88 Subaru wagon. It's ... yep.. burgundy! I still don't like burgundy, but even I have to admit that these 2 burgundy wagons look so good in that color. And next to each other, they are as adorable as mommy and baby. Only time will tell. It's been around 20 years since I've had car payments, and now I actually am "in debt" as of Tuesday night. It's about 1/4 the size of my Mercury wagon and it's taking getting used to.
