For me, it was Fritos and Dr. Pepper. When I was 7, my family drove to D.C. on a 2-week vacation. No Fritos or Dr. Pepper for 2 weeks, this kid thought she would die! And was so shocked to learn that the rest of the world (outside Texas) was ignorant of those greatest of pleasures!

Sorry, Larry. The Lay family has been big in Texas since the Frito-Lay merger. The Morton-Meyerson symphony hall in Dallas has a magnificent pipe organ donated by the Lay family. And guess what else.....

Anyone gone on the Herr Snack Factory tour? In Nottingham, PA. At the end of the tour they bring out a tray of potato chips right off the line, still warm. Argh. They are beyond excellent. Sadly, however, they will not let you stand there all day eating chips -- I tried this and they frown upon it.

now if they would just move the Herr factory next to the Anheiser-Busch plant in MO!
I've spent many a pleasant afternoon in their end-of-tour "tasting" room....

and as for paczki, well I've never heard nor seen one... and probably just as well:

A 5-ounce fried paczki has about 420-440 calories

I'll just stick to the sfagnayot at Chanukah!

Deb, I was just (sort of) rattling Larry's cage. I checked out some bios of Kenneth Lay, and it appears he has never worked for Frito-Lay, but I do believe he's of the Lay family that started the potato chip company. I don't think the chips are tainted with Enron association, though. Just calories.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like "pom poms" and "pasties" might go well together?

Muffy, I can neither confirm or deny any observations that you have made about my selective obliviosity or other quirky personality and/or philosophical traits .....except to say I'm not quite sure about my reaching selective obliviosity nirvana, but I am sure about confusion nirvana, which in and of itself is a paradox.

Speaking of potato chips, Neiman-Marcus was selling chocolate-coated potato chips (dark chocolate) before Christmas, and now they've showed up at the Starbucks I frequent. Haven't tried them yet, they shriek "No!" at me when I see them. That's just too evil.

As long as it isn't because of head lice. I'd be forced to shave my head then, and I do so hate the bald look on me.
And how did you manage to control youself for so long before making that pasties/pom-poms connection, anyway?

I like making my own potato chips once in a while, I must say. They are so good. And as for truly evil food, one day at the local fresh pasta place I caught the owner chowing down on chocolate pasta with cream ... "This is gooood," she said. Youch!
I admit to making chocolate bread a lot myself though -- with hazelnuts. (It's gooood. So are the variations.) And I've fallen hard for those new chocolate toaster strudels. They're like pain au chocolat. Well ... almost. Sort of. Kinda. I'm going to try rolling chocolate chips in those refrigerator crescent rolls (Pillsbury makes them, along with others) and see how that works. I'll let you know ...
BTW, bolillos are sort of mini-French bread loaves, so you can imagine what spiedies would be like on them. Oh gosh. This is making me hungry.

Wise are much better than Lays! I like the browned ones best. Lays doesn't have any browned ones like Wise does. I don't think you can really trust any bag of chips that doesn't have browned ones.

As far as Herr's brand potato chips, they have a slogan that says "Make Herr's yours". I think that's a bad slogan. I mean that's just the kinda of thinking that got Mike Tyson in trouble.

What this world needs are more politically correct potato chips. Or,for you folks in Indiana, potatoe chips.

I'm forced to say, yeah what Larry said, in regard to chips. Wise and and the brown burntish ones. Lays are just a little too uniform.
